Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail

The storm outside raged harder as I stood in my father’s old study at the Nolan family estate two hours later. Evelyn was still at the restaurant trying to perform damage control with the press, giving me a window of time I knew I couldn't waste. I had used my master key to enter the private safe behind the oil portrait of the corporate headquarters—a safe my mother believed only she had the combination to.

Inside were neatly bound leather ledgers and indexed files. Evelyn had always been meticulously organized; her cruelty was never impulsive, it was engineered.

I pulled out a thick blue folder labeled G. M. – Settlement & Oversight.

My hands shook as I turned the pages. It was far worse than Grace had described. Evelyn hadn't just threatened Grace in the hospital; she had built an invisible cage around her for thirty-six months.

There were receipts from private surveillance firms documenting Grace’s every move in Chicago. There were copies of rejection letters from nursing schools and hospitals where Grace had applied for jobs—letters written after Evelyn’s foundation made quiet, substantial donations to those same institutions’ board funds. Evelyn had deliberately cut off Grace’s ability to earn a living wage, keeping her trapped in low-paying, off-the-books jobs so that Grace would remain financially fragile and easily manageable.

Then I found a bank document stamped with a red CONFIDENTIAL seal.

It was a monthly wire transfer authorization from the Nolan Family Trust to a pediatric cardiology specialist named Dr. Arthur Vance. The memo line contained a single phrase: Delay of Procedure Protocol / Case #809.

A wave of nausea washed over me. Dr. Vance was Noah’s primary pediatric cardiologist at the medical center. My mother hadn't just monitored Grace—she was paying Noah’s doctor.

My phone buzzed on the desk. It was an unknown number. I answered immediately.

“Ryan?” Grace’s voice was hysterical, punctuated by the shrill, frantic alarms of medical monitoring equipment in the background. “Ryan, you need to come back! Noah collapsed in the observation room! They’re moving him to the pediatric ICU right now!”
