Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence

The stinging heat of the slap still burned against thirteen-year-old Mia’s cheek, blooming into a hot, bruised crescent of crimson against her pale skin. On the cold marble floor, the world tilted sideways. Mia blinked through a haze of sudden tears, her small fingers instinctively flying up to clutch the collar of her oversized grey dress.

Across the room, Julian froze. The charcoal-velvet jacket he wore seemed to swallow the light, a stark contrast to the blinding, sterile white of the drawing room. His gaze darted from his trembling wife, Elena, whose emerald silk dress shimmered like venom in the afternoon sun, down to the small, broken frame of the maid huddled on the floor.

“Elena,” Julian’s voice was dangerously low, a sharp edge cutting through the heavy air. “What in God’s name do you think you are doing?”

Elena’s platinum knot seemed to pull tighter as she squared her shoulders, her chest heaving beneath the emerald fabric. She didn't cower. Instead, she pointed a trembling, manicured finger straight at the girl.

“Look at her, Julian! Look at what she was holding!”

Julian took a slow, measured step forward, his polished oxfords clicking against the stone. He looked down at the floor where Mia had fallen. Scattered among the dust motes dancing in the sunlight lay a small, tarnished silver locket—and beside it, rolling softly to a halt against the baseboard, was a ring.

It was an antique piece of craftsmanship, heavy gold encrusted with a rare, deep-blue Ceylon sapphire, bordered by intricate filigree.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him as pale as the marble beneath them. He knew that ring. He knew every single microscopic scratch on its gold band. It was a ring that had vanished twenty years ago, locked away in a private vault that only he and a ghost from his past had ever known existed.

“Where did you get that?” Julian demanded, his voice cracking, all pretense of aristocratic calm shattering into a million pieces.

Mia shrank further back, sobbing softly, pulling her pigtails over her face. “I… I found it in the laundry basket, sir. I was just cleaning it. I swear I didn't steal it!”

Elena let out a harsh, bitter laugh that sounded like breaking glass. “Cleaning it? You lying little rat. You weren't cleaning it. You were admiring your inheritance, weren't you?”

May you like

Julian didn't hear his wife. He dropped to his knees, ignoring the pristine white floor, and reached out with a trembling hand to pick up the sapphire ring. As his fingers brushed the cold metal, a terrible, suffocating realization gripped his chest.

Because nested deep within the pocket of his own velvet jacket, pressing heavily against his heart, was its exact twin.
