Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Vault

The atmosphere in the study twenty minutes later was thick enough to choke on. The heavy mahogany doors were bolted shut, sealing out the curious eyes and ears of the mansion's domestic staff.

Mia sat rigid on the edge of a leather armchair, her feet dangling inches off the floor, still wearing the torn grey maid's uniform. Her cheek was swollen, a purple-blue bruise blooming beneath her left eye. Across from her, Julian stood by the towering Palladian window, staring out into the misty gardens, his thumb endlessly rubbing the rim of the sapphire ring in his palm.

Elena paced the Persian rug, her emerald silk whispering a hypnotic, menacing rhythm.

“Explain it, Julian,” Elena hissed, stopping dead in her tracks to glare at her husband's rigid back. “Explain how a penniless orphan girl, dragged out of a municipal shelter six months ago to scrub our floors, is walking around with the twin of the heirloom you swore was buried with your first wife.”

Julian closed his eyes. The memory of that rainy night twenty years ago flashed behind his eyelids—the hospital monitors flatlining, the unbearable grief, the whispered secrets that were never meant to see the light of day.

“I didn't give it to her, Elena,” Julian said quietly, turning around to face them. His eyes were bloodshot, the mask of invulnerability completely stripped away. “I didn't even know this ring existed outside of the primary set.”

“Then magic must be real!” Elena screamed, slamming her palm down onto the mahogany desk. “Because identical heirloom rings from the Vance dynasty don't just materialize in the laundry! Unless…” Elena stopped, her eyes narrowing into slits as a horrifying thought took root in her mind. “Unless she isn't who we think she is. Unless you have some bastard child stashed away in the slums that you decided to bring right under my nose!”

“No!” Mia cried out, bursting into sudden, violent tears. She scrambled off the chair and fell to her knees, clutching her head. “My name is Mia! My mama left me this locket! She said my family was rich, she said one day I would go home, but she died! She died in the fire!”

Julian froze. The fire.

His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. Twenty years ago, the estate on the cliffs had burned to the ground. Official reports said everyone inside had perished. He had spent months identifying bodies, mourning a loss that nearly drove him to madness.

Slowly, Julian crouched down until he was eye-level with the weeping girl. His hand shook as he reached out, not to strike, but to gently pull the silver locket away from her tangled pigtails. With trembling fingers, he snapped the tiny latch open.

Inside, beneath a faded, water-damaged piece of parchment, was a miniature photograph of a woman with platinum hair and deep, piercing eyes—and etched into the silver casing was a crest that only one family in the world possessed.

The Vance family crest.
