Chapter 4 - The Voice from the Shadows

A low, mechanical hum vibrated through the floorboards as emergency backup lights flickered to life, casting a sickly yellow glow over the archive room. Standing in the doorway of the hidden alcove was an elderly woman leaning heavily on a carved ebony cane. Her posture was rigidly aristocratic, her silver hair styled in a severe bun that mirrored Elena’s, and her eyes—sharp, calculating, and unmistakably Vance—locked onto Julian.
Elena gasped, clutching her throat. “Aunt Beatrice? But… you died in Switzerland ten years ago! We attended your funeral!”
Beatrice let out a dry, rasping chuckle that held no humor. “Funerals are so terribly expensive, my dear Elena, and terribly exaggerated. It’s amazing what a generous bribe to a Swiss coroner can achieve when you need to disappear from a toxic family.”
Julian stared at the woman in sheer disbelief. “You… you orchestrated the fire. You were there the night the twins were born.”
“I was,” Beatrice confirmed, stepping forward into the yellow light. Her cold gaze shifted past Julian, landing squarely on the small, trembling form of Mia hiding behind his velvet jacket. Beatrice’s expression softened momentarily, replaced by a strange, melancholic hunger. “And look what the tide washed back. My granddaughter.”
Elena shrieked, breaking past the threshold into the room. “Granddaughter?! Have you all lost your minds?! Julian, she is a maid! A common servant you hired off the streets! Are you going to let this senile old lunatic rewrite our family tree?”
“Silence, Elena!” Beatrice roared, slamming her cane against the stone floor with a force that rattled the nearby bookshelves. The authority in her voice was absolute, silencing Elena instantly. “You think you won the prize when you married into this family, don't you? You think Julian’s wealth, his empire, his legacy belongs to you. But the Vances’ bloodline cannot be bought with emerald silk and a pretty smile.”
Beatrice pointed her cane directly at Mia. “The night of the fire, I didn't let both twins burn. I smuggled one out to protect her from enemies within our own household—enemies who wanted the entire primary line erased so their own branch could inherit the fortune.” Beatrice's eyes shot a venomous glare straight at Elena.
Julian felt the ground give way beneath his feet. He looked down at Mia, then back at the twin rings resting in his palm. The puzzle pieces violently snapped together, painting a picture so dark, so calculating, that it made his stomach turn.

“You didn't just hide her,” Julian whispered, horror dawning in his eyes. “You brought her back here. You made her our maid.”
“How else was she going to reclaim her birthright?” Beatrice smiled coldly. “By knocking on the front door? Wealthy people don't open doors to strangers, Julian. But they always notice the people who clean their floors—until it's too late.”
