Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Wall Street's Bloodiest Betrayal

The penthouse suite of the Plaza Hotel was silent, save for the rhythmic tapping of high heels. Victoria Vance—the woman in the white designer dress—was staring at her reflection in the floor-to-ceiling mirror. She was furious. The traffic had been unbearable, and her husband, Thomas Vance, the CEO of Vance Biotech, had been bombardiering her phone with frantic text messages.

"What do you mean the merger is frozen?!" Victoria snapped as she finally picked up the call.

"I don't know!" Thomas’s voice was hysterical on the other end. "Vanguard Global just pulled out of the three-billion-dollar acquisition deal. They said we violated a hidden moral clause in the contract. Victoria, if this deal falls through, our stock plummets to zero by tomorrow morning! Did you say something stupid to the press? Did you offend someone?"

"Don't be ridiculous, Thomas! I’ve been shopping all afternoon," Victoria hissed, completely forgetting the old street cleaner she had humiliated hours ago. "The only person I even looked at was a filthy hobo on the sidewalk. Fix it, Thomas! Use your connections!"

Meanwhile, in a dimly lit, highly secured basement archive beneath the Vanguard headquarters, Arthur Sterling sat on a simple wooden chair. He had refused the leather armchairs, refused the expensive scotch, and refused to take off his orange high-visibility vest. Surrounding him were the three young men he had raised from orphanage system scholarships to become his top executives: Julian, Marcus, and Leo.

"Seven years ago, the jet's engines didn't fail, did they, Arthur?" Marcus asked, his voice barely a whisper as he laid out the official police reports from the 2019 crash.

Arthur looked at the photos of the charred wreckage. "The bombs were planted in the left wing. I found out thirty minutes before takeoff. I let the plane fly empty. I needed the world—and my enemies—to believe I was vaporized."

"Who did it?" Leo asked, slamming his fist onto the table. "Tell us! We control the markets now. We can crush them overnight!"

Arthur raised a single hand, silencing the three powerful men instantly. "The man who funded the bomb is the same man who is trying to buy Vance Biotech right now to launder his black market capital. My brother, Charles Sterling."

The room went completely breathless. Charles Sterling was currently running for a high-profile seat in the US Senate, branding himself as the ultimate family man and savior of the New York economy.

"If Charles finds out you're alive, he will finish the job," Julian warned frantically.

"He already knows," Arthur said calmly, leaning back. "Why do you think his sister-in-law, Victoria Vance, stopped her car just to throw a piece of trash at my feet today? It wasn't random, Julian. It was a message. Charles sent her to see if the ghost was real."

💥 CHAPTER 2 HOOK: Just as Arthur spoke, the heavy steel doors of the archive room burst open. A breathless security guard rushed in, holding a tablet. "Sir, we have a security breach at the perimeter! Someone just leaked an anonymous tip to the media with a photo of Mr. Sterling holding a broom on 42nd Street. The press is descending on the building right now, and Senator Charles Sterling's convoy just pulled into our private hangar."
