Chapter 4 - The Lady in White Meets the True King

Charles pulled out his phone and turned the screen toward Arthur. The live news broadcast showed a breaking headline: "STERLING FOUNDATION ACCUSED OF MASSIVE CHARITY FRAUD: BILLIONS MISSING FROM UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN'S FUNDS."

"I knew you were alive, Arthur," Charles laughed, a low, vicious sound. "I've known for months. I let you sweep the streets because I wanted to build the perfect trap. The moment you revealed yourself to the world, my media networks would release the falsified documents linking your personal accounts to the biggest charity embezzlement scheme in US history. If you reclaim your identity, you go to prison for the rest of your life. If you stay dead, I inherit the remaining Sterling trusts. Either way, you lose."

Julian and Marcus moved forward to defend Arthur, but Arthur raised his hand again, stopping them. He looked at the news broadcast, then looked at Charles. There was no fear in Arthur's eyes. Only pity.

"Charles, you always were an amateur at chess," Arthur said quietly.

Suddenly, the lights in the entire Vanguard lobby flickered and died, plunging the room into darkness for three seconds before the emergency red backup generators kicked in. In that brief window of darkness, the sound of heavy tactical boots echoed from the ceilings and the side entrances.

When the emergency lights stabilized, the lobby was surrounded by fifty federal agents wearing jackets emblazoned with a logo nobody expected: The Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CI) and the FBI.

Charles smirked, adjusting his tie. "Ah, the feds are here right on time to arrest you, Arthur."

The lead agent, a stern woman with steel-gray eyes, walked past Arthur without even looking at him. She marched directly up to Charles Sterling and pulled out a warrant.

"Senator Charles Sterling, you are under arrest for treason, corporate espionage, and the attempted murder of Arthur Sterling in 2019," the agent stated coldly.

Charles’s phone dropped from his hand, shattering on the marble floor. "What? No! I am the one who blew the whistle! Look at the documents! Arthur is the criminal!"

"The documents you leaked were routed through a server we've been monitoring for three years," the agent replied. "A server provided to us by an undercover federal informant who has been working deep within the New York sanitation department."

Charles slowly turned his head to look at Arthur.

💥 CHAPTER 4 HOOK: Arthur reached into his dirty orange vest and pulled out a small, highly sophisticated encrypted satellite radio device—the exact model used by deep-cover federal intelligence directors. "For seven years, Charles, I didn't hide from you," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, absolute authority. "I baited you. Every piece of trash I swept off the street for seven years was a day I spent watching your empire rot from the bottom up. And tonight, the street is completely clean."
