Chapter 3 - Betrayal in the High Court

"We have to go. Now," Eleanor said, slamming the laptop shut.
But as they reached the heavy metal exit doors of the archive building, headlights cut through the darkness of the alley. A sleek black sedan blocked their path. The doors opened, and out stepped a woman Eleanor trusted implicitly: Chief Justice Margaret Hayes, Eleanor’s lifelong friend.
The Hook: "Step away from the boy, Eleanor," Margaret said, her voice dripping with ice. "It's over."
The Ultimate BetrayalEleanor felt a sickness rise in her throat. "Margaret? You're a part of this?"
"Do you know how little the city pays us to risk our lives dealing with monsters, Eleanor?" Margaret asked, stepping into the dry shelter of the doorway. "Victor Vance offered us security. Stability. Claire was reckless. She dug into things she shouldn't have. If you give us the drive, the boy lives. He goes into an excellent foster home, far away from here."
"He is my grandson!" Eleanor roared, her voice echoing off the brick walls.

"He's a liability," Margaret snapped.
Noah, sensing the danger, slipped his hand out of Eleanor’s. He looked at the heavy wooden box in his arms, then at the wet pavement. With a bravery inherited from his mother, he kicked a stack of old metal filing cabinets behind the door, causing them to crash down with a deafening boom. The distraction gave Eleanor the chance to grab Margaret's wrist, twisting it back and slamming the heavy door shut, locking it from the inside.
