Chapter 4 - The Black Car Closes In

Trapped inside the building with the exits monitored, Eleanor knew they were running out of options. She could hear the hum of a drill against the lock outside. Marcus and his men were breaking in.

The Escape through the Underbelly"Noah, do you trust me?" Eleanor asked, looking into the eyes of the boy who looked so much like her lost daughter.

Noah nodded fiercely. "Claire said you always win."

"Then we win tonight," Eleanor said. She led him down into the sub-basement, where the old steam tunnels of Philadelphia connected to the city's subway system. The air was thick with the smell of rust and damp earth. They walked in pitch blackness, guided only by the weak flashlight on Eleanor's phone.

The Chase in the TunnelsBehind them, flashlight beams cut through the darkness.

"Find them!" Marcus’s voice echoed through the pipes. "The boy doesn't leave this tunnel alive!"

Eleanor and Noah sprinted along the narrow catwalk as a subway train roared past on the adjacent tracks, vibrating the very ground beneath their feet. The noise was deafening. Eleanor tripped, scraping her knee badly against the iron grating, but she refused to stop. She pulled herself up, her focus entirely on the boy in front of her.

They emerged an hour later through a maintenance grate near Independence Hall, soaked in sweat, mud, and rain. Eleanor knew she couldn't rely on the police, the local courts, or state officials. She needed a stage so large that the corrupt system couldn't suppress it.
