Chapter 9 - The Trial by Fire

The federal building erupted into absolute pandemonium. Alarms screamed as staff scrambled to evacuate. Eleanor’s heart hammered against her ribs. Noah wasn't at the federal building; he was supposed to be safe at an undisclosed safehouse guarded by Raymond’s elite team.

"Raymond, is Noah safe?!" Eleanor yelled over the din of the sirens.

Raymond didn't answer. He was staring at his phone, his eyes wide with horror. He turned the screen toward Eleanor. It was a live video feed of the safehouse. The guards were dead on the floor, and a man in a black tactical mask was carrying Noah, who was desperately kicking and screaming, out into a waiting van.

The Ultimate Dilemma"They didn't want the drive from the federal building, Eleanor," Raymond realized, drawing his weapon. "The threat here was a distraction to clear out the safehouse guards. They already have the boy."

Eleanor felt the world tilt. Her daughter was gone, and now her grandson was in the clutches of the monster who had destroyed Claire's life. But instead of breaking, something inside Eleanor snapped. The calculated, unyielding judge disappeared, replaced by a grandmother with absolutely nothing left to lose.

"Where are they taking him?" Eleanor demanded, grabbing Raymond’s tactical vest.

"The old iron foundry by the Delaware River," Raymond said, checking his tactical map. "It’s Victor’s old stronghold. It’s a fortress, Eleanor. We need a full SWAT response—"

"There is no time!" Eleanor shouted, sprinting toward the exit. "By the time SWAT coordinates, my grandson will be dead!"

The Showdown at the FoundryThirty minutes later, Eleanor’s SUV violently smashed through the rusted chain-link gates of the abandoned foundry. Rain tore through the shattered windshield as she stepped out into the mud, a licensed firearm—the one her late husband had taught her to shoot—gripped firmly in her hand.

The interior of the foundry was a cavernous maze of rusted steel, dripping water, and deep shadows. Tied to a heavy iron chair in the center of the room, beneath a single, flickering spotlight, was Noah. His face was bruised, but his eyes flared with fierce defiance when he saw Eleanor.

"Ah, the honorable Judge Whitmore," a voice boomed from the catwalks above.

Stepping into the light was Victor Vance. He looked older, his face scarred from a life in the shadows, but his eyes possessed the psychotic calm of a true predator. In his hand, he held a remote detonator.
