Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Cards

At 0800 hours, sitting behind a mahogany desk inside the secure perimeter of the intelligence command headquarters, I executed Phase Two.

My phone, which I had set to silent, vibrated violently against the wood. Ryan was calling. Then Linda. Then Ryan again. Over and over.

I ignored every single call, letting them ring straight to voicemail. Instead, I opened a secure terminal and patched through a direct encrypted video call to Marcus Vance.

"Colonel," Marcus said, his voice brisk and professional over the secure line. "I received your confirmation text. You're inside the command?"

"Locked, loaded, and operational, Marcus," I replied, my voice chillingly calm. "Tell me about the mortgage fraud."

"It's open and shut," Marcus answered, adjusting his glasses. "The notary seal Ryan used is fraudulent. Federal wire fraud, forgery, and grand larceny. Because it involves military housing and dependent allotments managed through federal channels, this crosses from a civil family law dispute directly into federal criminal jurisdiction. I’ve already forwarded the file to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID)."

"Good," I said, leaning back in my leather chair. My bare scalp felt cool against the air conditioning, a sharp, grounding reminder of why I was doing this. "What about Linda's offshore trust?"

"That’s where it gets poetic," Marcus grinned slightly. "Linda used your dependent status documentation and forged military signatures to claim a fraudulent family care allowance. Since she doesn't legally qualify as a primary dependent under your specific active-duty tier—she has her own pension and properties tucked away in Ohio—that’s military fraud. The Inspector General is already auditing her files."

"Let them burn," I whispered. "What is their current status?"

"Well," Marcus chuckled. "According to our real-time alerts, Ryan tried to use his credit card at 07:30 to buy breakfast at a local diner. Declined. Then Linda tried to use her debit card for her morning prescription refills. Declined, account frozen pending fraud investigation. And when they got back to the house, they found your notice to quit on the kitchen counter, along with the automated notification that the smart-lock security system has been reset, locking them out of the Wi-Fi, the thermostat, and the garage."

"Did they try to call the police?"

"They did. The local police arrived, looked at your deed, verified you are the sole owner, and told them it’s a civil matter—and furthermore, that there’s an active alert on the property regarding federal mortgage fraud. The officers politely escorted them off the front lawn with their suitcases."

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, letting the sweet taste of vindication wash over me. For four years, they had treated me like an ATM, a servant, and a nuisance. They had thought my absence on deployment meant weakness. They had thought my love for Ryan meant submission.

They were about to learn what happens when you corner a Colonel of the United States Army.
