Chapter 5 - The Mastermind Unveiled

Two days later, the fallout hit the local news outlets and military command channels like a shockwave.
Ryan and Linda were denied bail due to being flight risks, especially given the offshore account connections. The media caught wind of a high-ranking military intelligence Colonel whose civilian relatives attempted to commit multi-hundred-thousand-dollar mortgage fraud against her while sabotaging her career. Public sympathy and military solidarity rallied around me instantly. Fellow officers sent messages of unwavering support, and General Vance personally walked into my office to commend my handling of the internal security threat.
Yet, sitting in my command office late at night, reviewing the comprehensive forensic dossier Marcus Vance had compiled, I realized something didn't add up.
Ryan was lazy, and Linda was greedy, but neither of them possessed the sophisticated technical knowledge required to set up an offshore Cayman Islands shell corporation, route military encrypted allowance nodes, or forge a notary seal that bypassed federal verification systems on the first try.
Somebody else was pulling their strings.
My phone chimed. An anonymous text message from an encrypted proton-mail relay:
"You think you won, Colonel? Check the corporate registry of Vanguard Holdings. Your husband wasn't stealing for his mother. He was paying off a debt. And the person he owes isn't in jail."
My tactical instincts flared instantly. I immediately routed a trace through STACIC’s cyber-defense terminals. The ping bounced through three proxy servers in Zurich, Switzerland, before landing squarely on a domestic IP address located less than ten miles from the military base.
I didn't call the police. I didn't even call Marcus. I locked my office, strapped my tactical sidearm into its holster beneath my dress jacket, and drove straight to the coordinates.
The address led to an upscale, secluded corporate consulting firm nestled in a commercial park: Apex Global Solutions.
And the name on the primary executive lease agreement for Apex Global Solutions?
Arthur Sterling.

My ex-fiancée from ten years ago—a high-ranking defense contractor executive who had tried to steal classified logistics data during my deployment to the Horn of Africa, whom I had personally investigated and helped dishonorably discharge from his defense advisory role a decade ago.
He hadn't disappeared. He had spent ten years waiting for his revenge, and he had used my own husband as a Trojan horse to destroy me from the inside out.
