Chapter 8 - The Final Salute

"Valerie..." Arthur choked out, his hands flying up defensively as he scrambled backward against the edge of his desk. "W-What is the meaning of this? You can't—this is private property—"

"Quiet, Arthur," I said, my voice cutting through the jazz music like a razor blade. I stepped closer, pressing the barrel of my weapon just a fraction closer to his chest. "Ten years ago, I caught you selling classified logistics data to foreign brokers. I made sure you lost your clearance, your company, and your reputation. And instead of crawling into a hole, you spent a decade grooming my weak-willed husband and his parasitic mother to orchestrate a financial sabotage campaign against me."

Arthur swallowed hard, his throat bobbing frantically. Sweat beaded along his forehead. "You can't prove a single word of that... the shell corporations, the Cayman accounts... it's all firewalled—"

"It was firewalled," I interrupted coldly, pulling the encrypted tactical drive from my pocket and tossing it onto his desk. "Until three minutes ago, when my command team remotely mirrored your primary local server and downloaded every single communication log between you, Ryan, and Linda, including your voice notes discussing how to break my spirit and force me out of the military."

Arthur stared at the drive, his chest heaving rapidly. The arrogant corporate predator was gone; in his place was a cornered rat realizing the trap had snapped shut with bone-crushing finality.

"You're ruined, Arthur," I whispered, leaning down so my face was inches from his. "Federal espionage, conspiracy to commit economic sabotage, and aiding and abetting federal wire fraud. You will never see the outside of a maximum-security federal penitentiary for the rest of your natural life."

Before he could scream, before he could reach for the panic button hidden beneath his desk, the heavy mahogany office doors blew wide open.

Four heavily armed military police officers, led by Major David Vance, flooded into the room, subduing Arthur in a matter of seconds, slamming him face-first onto the expensive hardwood floor and slapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Area secure, Colonel!" David barked sharply, hauling Arthur to his feet as the disgraced executive thrashed and cursed in vain. "Federal marshals have already been notified. All servers are secured."

"Good work, Major," I said, sliding my sidearm back into its holster.

I turned away from Arthur as the MPs dragged him out of the room, kicking and screaming into the night. I walked slowly to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling city skyline bathed in the cool light of dawn.

My scalp was smooth, cool, and completely free of scars. The blood on my pillow from three nights ago felt like a lifetime away.

They had tried to break me. They had tried to shave away my identity, strip my resources, and force me to obey. Instead, they had given me the ultimate excuse to clean house.

I reached up, touched my bare head, adjusted the silver eagles on my collar, and smiled into the sunrise.

Game over.
