Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Cowards

"Valerie, stop playing games," Linda snarled, slamming her withered hand onto the steel table. "You look like a lunatic—what happened to your head? And what is the meaning of this childish tantrum? You are a wife! Your place is to submit to your husband and take care of this family! You will apologize right now, reinstate our credit cards, and transfer the title of that house back to Ryan, or I swear to God I will call your commanding general and have you court-martialed for insubordination in your personal life!"

I let out a slow, cold laugh. It wasn't warm; it was the sound of a predator enjoying the terror of a trapped rabbit.

"My commanding general," I repeated softly, leaning forward. "Linda, do you know who my commanding general is?"

"I don't care who he is!" Linda shrieked. "He’ll care when he finds out his female officer is a rebellious, unhinged harpy who abuses her husband!"

"General Marcus Vance is a personal friend of mine," I said smoothly, though Marcus Vance the attorney and General Vance were two different people, the coincidence of names added a poetic flair. "And more importantly... he happens to be sitting right across from me in spirit, reviewing your federal wire fraud charges, Linda."

Linda’s color instantly drained from her face. The self-righteous fury flickered, replaced by a sudden, creeping chill. "W-What are you talking about?"

"Federal case number 489-B," I said, reciting the details with the precision of a seasoned intelligence officer. "The second mortgage you and Ryan took out four months ago on my property using a forged Power of Attorney. Totaling $380,000."

Ryan stumbled backward, his knees hitting his chair. "H-How did you... who told you about that?"

"And let's not forget your little side project, Linda," I continued, turning my icy gaze back to my mother-in-law. "Diverting military dependent care stipends and survivor benefit allotments into an offshore Cayman Islands account under a shell corporation. Do you know what the maximum federal prison sentence is for military benefit fraud and identity theft?"

Linda’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "That... that was supposed to be our safety net! Ryan is my son! What's yours is his, and what's his is mine! You make a quarter of a million dollars a year! We were just taking what we deserved for putting up with your endless deployments!"

"Putting up with me," I whispered, standing up slowly. The height difference wasn't much, but the sheer aura of absolute authority made me tower over them. "I paid for every meal you ate, every medical bill you incurred, and every luxury you enjoyed while you sat on your lazy, ungrateful hands plotting my financial execution."

I reached into my breast pocket, pulled out two laminated documents, and tossed them onto the table.

"Those are your formal eviction notices from federal property, paired with criminal investigative referral warrants," I said calmly. "CID is currently executing a search warrant on our—my—house. They will find your fingerprints on the forged documents, the offshore bank login info on your laptop, Linda, and text messages where you both conspired to drain my accounts the moment I retired."

Ryan dropped to his knees, clutching at the edge of the table. "Valerie, please! Don't do this! We’re married! We can fix this! I love you! Mom was just stressed—"

"Shut up, Ryan," I said, my voice dropping an octave into a tone so venomous it made him flinch. "You stood in our bedroom last night, looked at the blood on my pillow and my hacked-off hair, and told me to obey. You made your choice."

Just then, the door swung open. Two armed CID investigators stepped into the room, flanked by military police.

"Colonel," the lead investigator nodded respectfully. "We’ve secured the residence. All digital evidence has been seized. Shall we take them into custody?"

"Take them away," I ordered, turning my back on my husband and my mother-in-law as they began to scream and thrash. "Book them for wire fraud, forgery, and federal identity theft. Ensure they spend the night in holding."
