Chapter 2 - The Raid and the Escape

The glass front of the tavern exploded inward in a cascade of glittering shards as tactical units swarmed the entrance. Shouts echoed off the walls, and patrons dove under sticky wooden tables, screaming in sheer panic.
Maeve froze, paralyzed by the sudden violence, but Gabriel Rossi moved with lethal, predatory grace.
In a fraction of a second, his massive bodyguard yanked Maeve behind the solid oak bar, shielding her body with his own as heavy boots thudded across the ruined floorboards.
"Federal Warrant! Nobody fucking move!" a voice roared through the smoke and haze.
Gabriel stood tall amidst the chaos, utterly unfazed. He buttoned his suit jacket, his gaze locked on the lead officer pushing through the shattered doorway—a man with cold eyes and a smug, triumphant grin.
"Gabriel Rossi," the officer barked, holding up a badge. "You’re under arrest for racketeering, conspiracy, and financial fraud. We've got you cornered."
Gabriel tilted his head, a chilling smile playing on his lips. "Captain Miller. I wondered when your department's paychecks would bounce high enough for you to finally make a move."
"Shut your mouth," Miller snarled, signaling his men to close in with zip-ties drawn. "And cuff the bartender, too. She’s an accessory to known syndicate operations."
Maeve’s blood ran ice cold. Accessory? She had poured beer and wiped counters for minimum wage!
"Hey! Are you insane?" Maeve yelled, trying to push past the guard. "I don't even know this man! I work here!"
Gabriel glanced back at her, his eyes softening for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of absolute calculation.
"Stay low, Maeve," Gabriel murmured, before turning his attention back to the captain. "Leave the girl out of this, Miller. She has nothing to do with my business."
"She was sitting with you, taking payoffs, according to our informant," Miller lied smoothly, signaling two officers to grab her arms.
Before their hands could touch her, Gabriel’s bodyguard whipped out a specialized tactical flash-bang, pulled the pin with his teeth, and dropped it behind the counter.
"Cover your eyes!" the guard roared.

A blinding white flash ripped through the room, accompanied by a deafening concussion that rattled Maeve’s teeth and plunged the bar into temporary, disorienting darkness. Amidst the screams and disoriented shouts of the police, Gabriel’s grip clamped firmly around Maeve’s wrist.
"If you want to survive the next ten minutes, run with me," Gabriel commanded, yanking her toward a concealed service exit behind the walk-in cooler.
