Chapter 8 - Queen of the Shadows

The sea breeze whipped salt spray across Maeve’s face as the high-speed motorboat tore away from the hidden cliffside cave, slicing through the midnight waves under a canopy of stars.
She sat alone in the cockpit, the heavy silver signet ring heavy and cold on her thumb.
Two days had passed since the raid on the compound. Captain Miller was currently sitting in a federal holding cell, stripped of his badge and facing multiple counts of corruption and domestic terrorism, courtesy of ironclad digital files Gabriel’s team had quietly uploaded to federal servers simultaneously with his surrender.
And Gabriel?
The news outlets reported that the notorious billionaire mogul Gabriel Rossi had miraculously survived a massive structural collapse during a police raid, disappearing into the underworld without a trace. But the men guarding the docks where Maeve landed knew the truth.
When Maeve stepped off the boat onto the private, rain-slicked pier in downtown Seattle, three long black sedans were idling at the edge of the water.
The rear door of the lead vehicle swung open.
A familiar figure stepped out into the amber glow of the streetlights. Dressed in his immaculate charcoal suit, unfazed, untouched, and utterly lethal, Gabriel Rossi stood waiting.
He walked slowly down the wooden pier toward her, his dark eyes never leaving her face.
When he reached her, he didn't offer flowery words or grand romantic gestures. He simply reached out, his warm fingers brushing against the heavy silver ring on her thumb.
"You didn't run far," Gabriel noted, a faint, rare smile touching his lips.
Maeve looked up into his eyes, shedding the last remnants of the terrified waitress she used to be. She stood taller, her gaze matching his fierce, unyielding intensity.
"I had a debt to collect," Maeve replied smoothly. "You still owe me for the milk and bread."
Gabriel let out a low, genuine laugh that echoed warmly over the dark ocean waves. He extended his arm, offering her his hand.

"Then come inside, Maeve. Let's talk about interest."
Maeve placed her hand in his, stepping willingly into the shadows of an empire where kindness was rewarded with power, and love was forged in the fire of absolute survival.
