Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

Three days passed in a gilded cage. Maeve was given unfettered access to the estate, fed gourmet meals by silent, respectful staff, and provided with expensive clothes she never asked for. Yet, she felt like a bird trapped in a palace of glass.

Gabriel spent hours locked in his study, managing a vast empire that stretched across shipping ports, real estate syndicates, and financial networks, yet he always made time to share dinner with her every evening. Slowly, against her better judgment, Maeve found herself seeing past the terrifying title of 'Mafia Boss' to the lonely, hyper-vigilant man beneath.

On the fourth night, a storm battered the coastline, thunder rattling the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the dining room.

Gabriel poured two glasses of aged scotch, handing one to Maeve.

"The federal task force has pulled back from our perimeter," Gabriel said, swirling the golden liquid in his glass. "Captain Miller is desperate. He realizes Julian is gone, and he knows his inside track has vanished."

"So it's over?" Maeve asked, a flicker of hope igniting in her chest. "Can I... can I go home?"

Gabriel stopped swirling his glass. He looked up, his dark eyes darkening with an emotion Maeve couldn't quite decipher.

"There is no 'home' to go back to, Maeve. Miller’s men burned your apartment complex to the ground yesterday afternoon. They called it an electrical fire."

Maeve dropped her glass. It shattered against the hardwood floor, expensive scotch splashing across her bare feet.

"What?" she whispered, horror freezing her blood. "My mother's photo albums... everything I had..."

Gabriel was across the room in a heartbeat, grabbing her shoulders to steady her as her knees buckled. "They wanted to flush us out, Maeve. They wanted to hurt you to get to me."

Before Maeve could scream or cry, the lights in the entire compound flickered violently and died.

Emergency red backup generators whirred to life, bathing the sprawling mansion in an eerie, pulsing crimson glow. Downstairs, the heavy crack of an automatic weapon echoed through the silent halls.

Gabriel’s expression transformed instantly into that of a lethal apex predator. He shoved Maeve behind his broad frame, drawing a heavy, suppressed automatic pistol from his shoulder holster with fluid, practiced speed.

"They didn't pull back," Gabriel hissed, his eyes locked on the double doors of the dining room. "They brought an army."
