Chapter 2 - The Highway Rescue

Into the Dust of the SlumsThe storm that had been brewing over the mountains of Nuevo León finally broke, but it didn't bring rain—only a suffocating, hot wind that whipped trash through the labyrinth of the northern shantytowns. Alejandro bypassed his driver, jumping into his grandfather’s old, unarmored Dodge Ram truck instead of his recognizable luxury SUV. If Valeria’s scouts saw his primary vehicle, Carmen would be dead before he reached her.

He tore through the unpaved streets, the truck’s suspension groaning as it hit deep potholes filled with stagnant water. The GPS coordinates provided by Mateo flickered on his dashboard, pointing toward a collapsed concrete warehouse that had once been a railway depot.

Through the dust storm, he saw it: the black suburban. It was parked crookedly behind a stack of rusted shipping containers. Two men in tactical vests—men he recognized from his own corporate security payroll—were moving toward a small, makeshift shack constructed from corrugated iron and blue plastic tarps.

Alejandro slammed his foot on the gas, roaring into the clearing and sliding the truck sideways, cutting off the two guards just as they reached the entrance of the shack.

"Stand down!" Alejandro roared, throwing the truck door open and stepping out into the blinding wind, a heavy iron tire iron gripped firmly in his right hand. "Step away from that structure right now, or I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your lives in a federal penitentiary!"

The guards froze, startled by the sudden appearance of their ultimate boss. The lead guard, a scarred mercenary named Franco, lowered his hand from his holster. "Señor Garza... we are under direct orders from the corporate security matrix to clear this area of illegal squatters. This is company land."

"I am the company!" Alejandro shouted, his voice echoing against the hollow iron sheets. "You work for me, not my wife. Get out of here before I call the federal police and show them the extra-legal accounts you’ve been drawing from."

Franco hesitated, weighing the authority of the man who signed his paychecks against the ruthless woman who held his blackmail files. With a curt nod, he gestured to his partner. "We’re leaving, Señor Garza. But you should know... the lady inside isn't alone. And she isn't planning on running anymore."

The Sanctuary of Broken DreamsAs the suburban sped away, kicking up rocks, Alejandro turned toward the shack. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He pulled back the heavy, dirty plastic flap that served as a door.

The interior was tiny, smelling of damp earth, old cardboard, and the faint, sweet scent of baby powder. A single kerosene lamp illuminated the room. In the corner, sitting on a pile of clean, neatly folded rags atop a wooden pallet, was Carmen.

She held the twins against her body, her arms wrapped around them like a human shield. Her eyes, wide with terror, slowly focused on Alejandro. When she recognized him, the fear didn't vanish—it turned into an agonizing, protective rage.

"Get out," she whispered, her voice cracked from the dust and dehydration. "Haven't you taken enough from me, Alejandro? You took my home, my name, my dignity. You let that woman spit on me. Leave my children alone."

"Carmen... please," Alejandro said, dropping the tire iron and falling to his knees on the dirt floor, completely uncaring of his designer trousers. "I know. I know everything."

"You know nothing!" she cried out, her voice waking one of the babies, who began to whimpered softly. She rocked the child instantly, her instincts overriding her anger. "You believed her! You believed the photos, the accounts... you believed I could steal from the woman who was like a mother to me! You didn't even let me tell you... I was pregnant, Alejandro. I found out the morning your thugs threw me into the street!"

The words hit him like a physical blow. Tears blurred his vision as he looked at the two tiny faces peeking out from the rebozo. They had his jawline, his high forehead, but they had Carmen’s beautiful, expressive dark eyes.

"I was blind, Carmen. I was an idiot who let pride control him," he wept, reaching out a hand, though he didn't dare touch her without permission. "Mateo found the records. I know Valeria framed you. I know about the maid. I came here to take you home."

Carmen let out a hollow, bitter laugh that cut through the darkness. "Home? To that mausoleum? To the house where every corner reminds me of your betrayal? No, Alejandro. This dirt floor is cleaner than your palace because there are no lies here. We survive on what I find in the trash, but my children sleep knowing their mother never sold her soul."

The Ultimatum of the Night"I don't expect you to forgive me," Alejandro said, his voice dropping to a fierce, desperate whisper. "But you cannot stay here. Valeria knows where you are. Franco will report back to her. She is desperate, Carmen. The board is investigating her for financial fraud. If she realizes these children are mine, she will use every resource she has left to eliminate them to protect her share of the inheritance."

Carmen looked down at the twins. The reality of the danger pressed in around the fragile walls of the shack. She knew Valeria's capacity for cruelty better than anyone.

"If I come with you," she said, her voice dropping to a hard, cold register he had never heard from her before, "it is not as your wife. It is not for your comfort. We go to a safe house of my choosing. And you will give me the resources to tear Valeria's life apart piece by piece. I want her to feel what it’s like to have nothing but the dirt under her fingernails."

Alejandro stood up, a dark satisfaction blooming in his chest. The gentle woman he had married had been forged by fire into an avenging angel. "Anything you want, Carmen. I will give you the world, even if I have to burn my own empire to the ground to do it."
