Chapter 5 - The Gala of Vengeance

The Ghost in the BallroomThe entire assembly turned as one. The silence that fell over the room was absolute, so profound that the hum of the television cameras sounded like a roar.

Walking down the center aisle, flanked by federal prosecutors and uniform officers from the Attorney General’s office, was Alejandro Garza. He was dressed in a sharp, dark suit, looking every bit the formidable billionaire who had ruled the city's economy for a decade.

But he wasn't walking alone.

Beside him, holding her head high, dressed in an elegant, royal blue gown that matched the color of the ancient Garza family crest, was Carmen. In her arms, she held the twin infants, wrapped securely in the very same cotton rebozo she had used on the highway shoulder—a deliberate symbol of her survival.

Valeria’s face went from pale to a ghastly, greenish gray. She staggered backward against the podium, knocking the microphone sideways with a horrific screech of static.

"You... you're dead," she gasped, her voice trembling so violently that her words were barely intelligible. "The vault... it was sealed!"

"The vault your maid helped you rob?" Alejandro said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room. He stepped up onto the stage, gesturing to the federal agents, who immediately surrounded Valeria and her brother, Rodolfo. "The vault where you tried to bury the evidence of my grandmother’s murder?"

The Presentation of the Damning ProofBefore Valeria’s high-priced lawyers could step forward to intervene, Alejandro tapped his own phone against the podium’s media hub. The massive projector screen behind Valeria instantly changed.

The forged will vanished. In its place, a high-definition video began to play. It was the security footage from the charity clinic showing the birth of the twins, followed immediately by the infrared recording of Valeria and her maid opening the family safe.

But the final blow was an audio file that began to play through the ballroom’s premium sound system—the crystal-clear recording Mateo had recovered from the bank vault’s backup intercom system just hours earlier.

“Did you really think I wouldn't track the key’s digital registration, Alejandro? ... A tragic suicide pact inside a locked bank vault... By tomorrow morning, I will be the sole administrator of the Garza estate...”

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Journalists scrambled forward, their cameras flashing like mini-explosions, capturing every nuance of Valeria’s breakdown. The politicians she had spent the last year bribing began quietly slipping out of the side exits, desperate to distance themselves from the radioactive scandal.

"It's a lie! It's a deepfake!" Valeria screamed, kicking off her designer heels as she tried to break through the ring of federal agents. "Rodolfo, do something! Call the governor!"

Rodolfo, however, was already on his knees, his hands behind his head as a federal officer snapped steel handcuffs around his wrists. "Shut up, Valeria! Just shut up! They have everything!"

The Judgment of the MotherAs the guards dragged Valeria toward the stage steps, she found herself forced to stop directly in front of Carmen. The contrast between the two women was stark: the glittering, fraudulent socialite reduced to an ugly, screaming criminal, and the woman she had mocked as a trash picker standing with the quiet, unyielding grace of a true queen.

"You think you won, Carmen?" Valeria spat, a strand of hair falling wildly across her face. "You're still just a dirty peasant who slept in the dirt! You'll never be one of us!"

Carmen looked down at her, her expression completely devoid of anger. It was the same look of heartbreaking compassion she had given her on the highway shoulder—the look that had haunted Alejandro's soul.

"I never wanted to be one of you, Valeria," Carmen said softly, her voice carrying an authority that silenced the remaining journalists. "Because while you were busy stealing a fortune that didn't belong to you, I was learning the true value of life. You thought you left me with nothing. But you left me with my children, my honor, and the truth. And today... the truth is sending you to the place where you belong."

Carmen reached into her elegant bag, pulled out the wrinkled, dirty 200-peso bill that Valeria had thrown at her feet on the highway, and gently tucked it into the pocket of Valeria’s white mourning jacket.

"For your milk in prison," Carmen whispered. "Or whatever."
