Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Trap

The Suffocating SilenceInside the vault, the air grew noticeably heavier within thirty minutes. The thick concrete and steel walls insulated them completely from the outside world, creating a tomb of luxury. Alejandro slammed his shoulder against the emergency escape hatch, but the external electronic deadbolts had been fried from the control room upstairs.
"Save your energy," Carmen said calmly, sitting on the concrete floor with her back against the open safe deposit box. She held the emerald cross in her palm, its stones catching the dim emergency light. "Valeria thinks she has won because she measures strength by the locks she can control. But she forgot one thing about your grandmother: she was a survivor of the revolution. She never built a room without a secret."
Alejandro knelt beside her, his chest heaving as the panic of their situation began to set in. "Carmen, I’m so sorry. I brought you into this. If we don't get out of here, our children..."
"Look at the blueprints in the diary," Carmen interrupted, tapping the leather book. "Your grandmother knew the bank’s architects. Look at the section detailing the structural columns."
Alejandro flipped through the yellowed pages of his grandmother’s journal. On the back cover, drawn in meticulous blue ink, was a schematic of the bank vault built in 1974. The vault room shared a structural wall with the city's old underground drainage canal—a canal that ran directly beneath the foundations.
Behind box 771, the concrete wasn't solid; it was a reinforced brick lintel designed to be removed from the inside in case of a bank siege during the political unrest of the 1970s.
"We don't need to break the steel door," Alejandro realized, his eyes widening. "We need to break the back wall."
Using the heavy iron tire iron they had smuggled in inside the cleaning cart, Alejandro began systematically striking the mortar lines behind the safety deposit racks. The work was exhausting, each blow consuming precious oxygen, but fueled by the desperate need to see his children again, he smashed through the centuries-old brickwork until a cool, damp rush of air hit his face. The smell of the underground river washed over them.
The Escape Through the UnderworldThey squeezed through the narrow opening just as the vault’s main air supply dropped to critical levels. They dragged themselves through the slimy, dark tunnels of the Monterrey drainage system, guided only by the flashlight on Alejandro’s phone.
When they finally emerged from a maintenance manhole three blocks away, covered in mud and filth, Mateo was waiting for them in a nondescript delivery van.
"They think you're dead inside the vault," Mateo said, handing them clean towels and water. "Valeria is currently organizing an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM to announce your 'disappearance' and claim temporary executive control of the entire conglomerate."
Carmen looked at herself in the van’s rearview mirror. She was covered in grime, her clothes torn, looking remarkably like she had during her days on the highway shoulder. But her eyes were bright with an icy fire.
"Let her hold the meeting," Carmen said, a dangerous smile touching her lips. "Let her invite the press. Let her invite her political friends. We are going to give her the grand finale she deserves."
The Gathering of the VulturesThe next morning, the grand ballroom of the Garza Corporate Tower was packed to capacity. Representatives from every major media outlet in Mexico were present, alongside wealthy investors and the high-ranking politicians Valeria had spent the last year bribing.
Valeria stood at the grand podium, dressed in immaculate, custom-tailored white mourning attire. She held a lace handkerchief to her eyes, squeezing out theatrical tears for the cameras.
"It is with a shattered heart that I stand before you today," Valeria cried into the microphone, her voice echoing through the massive hall. "My beloved husband, Alejandro, collapsed under the emotional weight of his ex-wife's tragic, criminal lifestyle. We discovered them this morning... having taken their own lives inside our family vault. In his final will, which I have here, Alejandro left the entire future of the Garza Group to me, so that I may continue his legacy of honor."
Behind her, a massive projector screen displayed a forged document showing Alejandro’s signature transferring all voting shares to her name. The crowd murmured in shock and sympathy, cameras flashing rapidly.
"Are there any questions before we sign the official transition documents?" Valeria asked, looking around the room with secret, malicious satisfaction.
May you like
"Yes," a clear, powerful voice echoed from the back of the ballroom. "I have a question about the inheritance."
The heavy oak doors at the rear of the hall swung open.
