Chapter 10 - The Syndicate’s ShadowThe interrogation room was a stark, windowless cube bathed in the sterile glare of a flickering fluorescent tube. A single stainless-steel table stood in the center, flanked by two bolted chairs.

David was pushed roughly into a seat, his wrists still cuffed. He waited in the tense silence, listening to the drip of his own erratic heartbeat.

The heavy metal door clicked open, and a tall, impeccably tailored woman stepped inside. She wore a sharp charcoal-gray suit, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, flawless bun. She wasn't a prison warden, and she certainly wasn't a federal prosecutor. She radiated the terrifying, aristocratic aura of corporate royalty—someone who treated human lives like lines on a balance sheet.

She pulled out the opposite chair, sat down with deliberate slowness, and crossed her legs, resting her chin on her manicured fingertips.

David stared at her, a bitter, humorless laugh escaping his cracked lips. "Let me guess. She sent her corporate cleaner to finish the job personally? Couldn't wait for the rot to set in naturally?"

The woman didn't smile. Her eyes, cold as arctic ice, locked onto his with a piercing, analytical intensity.

"If she wanted you dead, David, you would have suffered a fatal heart attack eighteen months ago while sweeping the prison yard," the woman replied, her voice smooth, deep, and razor-sharp. "You underestimate her vision. To her, you are nothing more than a minor statistical error—a mosquito she swatted away without breaking a sweat."

David’s jaw tightened, a vein throbbing violently at his temple. "Then why am I here? Why pull me out of my cell?"

"Because," the woman leaned forward, resting her forearms on the table, "there are those of us in the upper echelons of global finance who view her monopoly not as a triumph, but as a dangerous anomaly. She holds too much power. Too many quantum patents. Too much control over the world's digital infrastructure."

She slid a sleek, matte-black holographic tablet across the steel table.

"We know about your original plan, David. We know you wanted her empire. And more importantly... we know you still want her head on a platter."

David looked down at the tablet. The screen flickered to life, displaying a detailed, multi-layered architectural schematic of a sprawling, heavily fortified private island in the Mediterranean—complete with satellite imagery, marine security grids, and blind spots in the perimeter defense.

"What is this?" David whispered, his voice trembling with a sudden, surging adrenaline.

"An invitation," the woman said softly. "The Syndicate of the Obsidian Veil is launching a final, irreversible strike against her legacy. We have the resources, the technology, and the military muscle. But we lack one crucial element."

She tapped the screen, highlighting a tiny, restricted subterranean corridor beneath the island's main villa.

"We need someone who knows her psychological profile. Someone who knows how her mind works when she's backed into a corner. We need an insider."

David stared at the schematic, a dark, wicked grin slowly spreading across his face, replacing the despair of years of confinement. The hunger for absolute power, long dormant, roared back to life with terrifying fury.

"When do we leave?" he asked.
