Chapter 14 - The Echoes of SilenceThe transition from the chaos of the island raid to the sterile walls of the medical facility was seamless, almost ghostly.

David Vance blinked rapidly under the blinding, clinical white lights of the monitoring room. There were no cell bars here, no damp concrete floors, and no rough prison guards shouting obscenities. Instead, his body was securely strapped into an ergonomic carbon-fiber restraint chair, and a sleek neural-interface headset was locked snugly around his temples.
He wasn't serving a standard prison sentence anymore. He had been designated a state-level security threat of the highest order, transferred to a classified black-site research facility funded in part by his ex-wife’s corporate security grants.
"Status check on Subject Vance," a detached, synthetic voice echoed from a hidden overhead speaker.
"Neural synch at ninety-nine percent. Cognitive loop initialized," a technician replied from behind a one-way observation mirror.
David tried to scream, but his jaw was locked by a localized micro-stimulant. His vocal cords produced only a dry, rattling wheeze.
And then, the world around him began to dissolve.
The white walls of the room melted away, replaced by the brilliant, piercing glare of the sun over turquoise ocean waters. The roar of helicopter rotor blades filled his ears—loud, deafening, and relentless.
He was back in the cabin. He looked down at his own hands; they were younger, trembling with frantic greed. Sitting right beside him, holding her rounded belly in a light coat, was his wife.
"Come closer to the door, my love," his own voice spoke out of his mouth, completely independent of his current will. "The view from here is simply incredible."
He tried to stop his body, screamed internally with every ounce of his soul, but he was trapped as a helpless passenger in his own memory. He watched in agonizing, looping horror as his hands reached out, grabbed her arm, and forcefully pushed her forward into the empty air.

Again. And again. And again.
It was the ultimate psychological torment—a digital purgatory where he was forced to relive his greatest crime for all eternity, watching the woman he tried to destroy emerge victorious while he burned in his own regret.
