Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the MachineThe husband stared at the screen, his blood turning to ice.

The video loaded automatically. It was a crisp, high-definition aerial recording taken from the exterior camera of his own private helicopter. Every detail was terrifyingly clear: the turquoise water below, his own voice cutting through the rotor noise—“Come closer to the door, my love”—and the unmistakable, brutal shove that sent his pregnant wife plunging into the abyss.

His breath caught in his throat. The whiskey glass slipped from his numb fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor in an explosion of amber shards and crystal splinters.

"Mr. Vance? Are you alright?" Inspector Thorne asked, spinning around at the sudden crash.

The husband couldn't speak. His face drained of all color, his lips parting in a silent, suffocating gasp. His entire world was collapsing inward at lightspeed. The master plan, the airtight alibi, the billions of dollars—all of it evaporating into thin air because of a camera he had completely forgotten existed.

She recorded it. She knew.

Before he could lunge forward to smash the phone against the wall, the television screens across the mansion hummed back to life.

Instead of news reporters, the massive displays broadcasted a live, crystal-clear video feed.

It wasn't a recording from the ocean floor. It was a live transmission from a secure, high-tech command center. And sitting in the center of the leather executive chair, dry, composed, wearing a pristine white silk robe and cradling her rounded belly, was his wife.

Gasps echoed through the drawing-room. The security guards froze. Inspector Thorne’s jaw dropped open as he stared from the television screen to the trembling, pale wreck of a man standing before him.

"Good evening, Inspector," the wife’s voice resonated through the mansion's speakers, calm, melodic, and chillingly authoritative. "I trust my husband has been entertaining you with his fabricated tales of grief?"

The husband stumbled backward, his back hitting the marble fireplace. "No... no, that's impossible... she's dead... I saw her fall..." he stammered, pointing a shaking finger at the screen.

On the display, the wife offered a cold, razor-thin smile.

"You saw what I allowed you to see, David," she said, her voice dripping with lethal elegance. "Did you really think a woman who builds global quantum encryption networks wouldn't secure her own personal aircraft with redundant, off-site telemetry? Every flight is live-streamed to a secure, immutable ledger. Every action you took tonight has been timestamped, archived, and broadcasted directly to federal prosecutors, international maritime authorities, and every major media outlet on the planet."

Inspector Thorne’s hand instinctively drifted to the holster at his hip. He glared at the husband, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure disgust.

"David Vance," Thorne declared, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor. "You are under arrest for the attempted murder of your wife, conspiracy, and premeditated assault. Turn around and put your hands behind your back."

Two massive security guards didn't wait for him to comply. They lunged forward, grabbing his arms and violently forcing him down onto the shattered glass. The sharp edges bit into his knees, but he barely felt the pain.

His mind was screaming in sheer panic. The billions weren't his. The freedom wasn't his. He was ruined.

As the cold steel of handcuffs ratcheted tightly around his wrists, he looked up at the television screen one last time, his eyes burning with helpless rage.

"You can't do this!" he screamed at the monitor. "I'll destroy you! I'll take everything!"

The wife tilted her head, her expression remaining utterly impassive.

"You already tried, David," she replied softly. "Now, let's see how well you survive in a concrete box without a single penny to your name."

The screen flickered off.
