Chapter 1 - The Silver Pen and the Blood Stained Marble

The first man’s hand never made it inside his jacket.

Elena didn't think; she reacted. The six years of playing the invisible, overweight assistant dissolved in a fraction of a second. She lunged forward, her body moving with a terrifying, fluid speed that defied her size. Before Roman Valenti could even turn his head, Elena drove the heavy silver fountain pen straight through the first assassin’s hand, pinning his palm to the black marble table with a sickening thud.

The man screamed, the sound echoing off the high ceilings.

The second assassin drew a suppressed Beretta, but Elena was already moving. Using the first man’s pinned arm as leverage, she swung her weight around, delivering a brutal, bone-crattering elbow strike directly to the second man's jaw. The crack of his breaking bone resounded through the silent room. As he stumbled backward, she caught his wrist, twisted it until it snapped, and intercepted the firearm before it could hit the floor.

Two seconds. Two armed men neutralized.

Elena stood over them, the Beretta held in a flawless, unwavering tactical grip. Her breathing was steady. Her navy dress wasn't even wrinkled.

The conference room was dead silent. Corbin Hale had fallen out of his chair, scrambling backward like a terrified crab. The rest of the Valenti captains stood frozen, their hands hovering over their holstered weapons, looking at the "sensible, quiet assistant" as if she had just materialized from a nightmare.

Roman Valenti slowly rose from his seat. His dark eyes, usually cold and calculating, were wide with a mixture of shock and lethal curiosity. He looked at the blood on his marble table, then at the smoking gun in Elena's hand.

"Elena," Roman said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low octave. "What the hell was that?"

Elena didn't lower the weapon. Instead, she tilted her head, her submissive facade completely shattered. The timid assistant was gone; in her place stood a woman with the eyes of a wolf.

"That, Mr. Valenti," Elena said, her voice dripping with an icy authority they had never heard before, "was me saving your life from the Moretti hit squad. And it's the last time I ever answer to the name Elena Lane."

She reached into her collar, pulling out a heavy, platinum signet ring hidden beneath her dress—a ring bearing the crest of a roaring obsidian lion.

Corbin Hale gasped, his face draining of all color. "The... The Leone Family? That's impossible. They were slaughtered ten years ago!"

"Not all of us," Elena whispered, her eyes locking onto Roman. "My name is Helena Leone. And I’m here to take back my city."
