Chapter 19 - The Master’s Promise

Later that evening, a knock sounded at the western cottage door.

Elena opened it, her eyes widening in surprise as she saw Adrienne standing on the porch, holding a small, wrapped wooden box.

"Signor Valente? Is something wrong?" she asked anxiously.

"Nothing is wrong, Elena," Adrienne said smoothly, stepping aside as he handed the box to her. "Open it."

Elena carefully unfastened the twine and lifted the lid. Inside lay a set of polished brass keys and a formal, signed deed written on heavy parchment.

"These are the legal deeds to this cottage," Adrienne explained, his voice steady and unyielding. "And the trust fund established under Mia's name for her education through university. No matter what happens to me, or to this estate, this property belongs to you and your daughter permanently."

Elena’s hands trembled so violently she nearly dropped the box. Tears streamed down her cheeks, and she instinctively reached to drop to her knees.

Adrienne moved with preternatural speed, catching her by the elbow before she could bow.

"Never kneel to me, Elena," Adrienne said firmly, his gray eyes holding hers with absolute respect. "You brought light into a house that had forgotten what the sun looked like. That is a debt I can never fully repay."
