Chapter 11 - The New Housekeeper

The vacancy left by Ranata’s abrupt dismissal required immediate attention, but Adrienne Valente did not consult employment agencies or syndicate ledgers. He appointed Elena.
When Elena was called into the grand study to receive her promotion, she stood before the massive walnut desk with a mixture of awe and caution. Her hands were neatly folded over her apron, and her eyes stayed respectfully lowered.
"The domestic staff needs a firm hand, Elena," Adrienne said, his tone clipped and professional as he signed a stack of administrative documents. "Not a cruel one. A fair one. You will oversee the east wing, manage the kitchen supplies, and ensure the rules of this house are respected."
"Thank you, Signor Valente," Elena replied, her voice trembling slightly. "I won't let you down."
"I know you won't," Adrienne added, looking up from his papers. "And your quarters have been moved. The small cottage near the western rose garden is yours now. It has a proper kitchen, more sunlight, and a yard for Mia."

Elena stared at him, tears welling in her eyes. For a woman who had lived under the constant threat of destitution and fear, a cottage with a garden felt like a palace. She dipped her head deeply. "May God bless you, sir."
Adrienne didn't answer. He simply returned to his work, but the shadow that usually lingered behind his eyes had receded just an inch.
