Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Fake NameMara Ellison’s lungs burned as she sucked in the humid Chicago air outside her aunt’s wrought-iron gates. Her hands, dusted with residual flour from the previous night's baking, gripped the cold brick pillar until her knuckles turned white.

Kieran Vale.

Why out of all the names swirling in her exhausted, humiliated brain had she chosen that one?

She knew the name well enough, though not because she moved in high-society investment circles. Vale Holdings was the ruthless private equity firm currently buying up historical blocks on Clover Street, threatening to bulldoze her beloved grandmother's bakery to make way for luxury high-rises. And Kieran Vale himself? Whispers in the commercial district painted him as a ghost—a predatory billionaire who bought failing businesses, stripped them for parts, and left nothing behind.

"You just signed your own social death warrant, Mara," she muttered to herself, squeezing her eyes shut.

Inside the garden, the silence that had followed her departure must have lasted all of three seconds before the gossips resumed their tearing into her reputation. She could picture it: Aunt Celeste shaking her head with manufactured pity, Gavin smirk-laughing into his champagne flute, and Vanessa soaking up every drop of her misery.

She reached into her purse, fished out her cracked smartphone, and opened her contacts. She needed to leave before someone came out to interrogate her. She needed to pack up her salted caramel tarts from the dessert table—the tarts they didn't deserve—and drive back to her tiny apartment above the bakery.

As she turned back toward the gate to retrieve her apron and baking boxes, the low, throbbing rumble of an engine cut through the ambient suburban quiet.

It wasn't a standard sedan or an SUV. It was a matte-black Rolls-Royce Phantom, its V12 engine purring with a low, menacing growl. The car didn't just park near the curb; it commanded the space, pulling up directly blocking Aunt Celeste’s manicured driveway.

Mara froze.

The rear passenger door swung open with a heavy, satisfying click.

A pair of polished oxblood leather shoes hit the pavement first, followed by sharply creased charcoal trousers. A man stepped out, tall and broad-shouldered, wearing a bespoke double-breasted suit that screamed quiet, lethal authority. His hair was dark, slicked back with precise neatness, and his jawline looked as though it had been carved from granite.

Kieran Vale.

Mara’s breath hitched in her throat. She stumbled backward, her heel catching on the curb. How is this possible? She had only said his name three minutes ago. Was she hallucinating from stress? Had the universe decided to amplify her humiliation into a full-blown psychological nightmare?

Kieran didn't look at the house yet. He adjusted his titanium-framed watch, his sharp eyes scanning the perimeter before locking dead onto Mara standing by the gate.

He didn't smile. But a dangerous, slow amusement flickered in his dark, unreadable eyes.

He started walking toward her, his stride eating up the distance with terrifying grace. Two larger men in identical dark suits stepped out of the front seats, hanging back a few paces, establishing a perimeter.

Mara’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She opened her mouth, ready to confess, ready to beg for mercy, ready to run.

Before she could speak, Kieran stopped inches away from her. The scent of expensive sandalwood, rain, and raw power washed over her.

"Mara Ellison," he said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated right through her chest. "You kept me waiting. And here I thought we had an appointment."
