Chapter 2 - The Intrusion at the Garden GateThe heavy iron gate clicked shut behind Mara as Kieran Vale stepped inside the perimeter of the Ellison estate, completely uninvited.

Across the manicured lawn, the chatter of twenty-three elite guests abruptly died. The champagne flutes froze midway to lips. Aunt Celeste, who had been mid-laugh recounting one of Vanessa’s equestrian trophies, blinked in sheer, unadulterated shock.

Gavin’s face drained of color.

"Mr... Mr. Vale?" Uncle Bernard stammered, his fork finally dropping onto his plate with a sharp clatter. He stood up so fast his chair screeched against the flagstone patio, smoothing down his designer golf polo with trembling hands. "To what do we owe the absolute honor? I didn't realize Vale Holdings had any real estate acquisitions scheduled in this neighborhood."

Kieran didn't even glance at Bernard. His gaze remained fixed entirely on Mara, though a slight, sardonic tilt touched the corner of his lips.

"We don't," Kieran said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet garden. "I wasn't here for the zoning. I was looking for my fiancée."

Pin-drop silence.

The word hung in the humid afternoon air like a live grenade.

Celeste gripped the edge of the white linen table so hard her knuckles turned white. "Fiancée?" she choked out, her voice pitching up an octave. "Excuse me, Mr. Vale, there must be some mistake. Our family... we weren't informed of any engagement. Vanessa is the only daughter getting married today—"

"I am not talking about Vanessa," Kieran interrupted, his tone shifting from conversational to ice-cold. He turned his head slowly, fixing Celeste with a stare so piercing it made the older woman recoil. "I am talking about the woman you banished to the children's table."

A collective gasp rippled through the guests.

Marcus, the nine-year-old boy still holding his plastic spoon, looked up wide-eyed and whispered, "Whoa."

Mara stood paralyzed, her mind racing a million miles a minute. He's playing along, she thought, panic and disbelief warring in her chest. Why on earth is Kieran Vale playing along with a desperate lie told by a bankrupt baker?

"Mr. Vale, surely this is some sort of misunderstanding," Gavin stepped forward, attempting to flash his best corporate-charm smile, though his hands shook slightly. "Mara has... well, she has a very active imagination. She tends to exaggerate her social circle to cope with—"

"Gavin, right?" Kieran cut him off, his voice dangerously soft as he took a slow step toward the patio. "The failed venture capitalist who traded a real woman for a walking checklist of social anxieties. Tell me, does it hurt knowing your ex-wife—sorry, ex-girlfriend—has outranked you before the appetizers are even cleared?"

Gavin stepped back as if struck, his face flushing crimson. Vanessa burst into tears, dropping her napkin onto her plate and burying her face in her mother's shoulder.

"This is outrageous!" Celeste shrieked, finding her voice and abandoning all pretense of polite society. She pointed a trembling finger at Mara. "That girl is a nobody! She bakes bread in a rundown shop on Clover Street! She sat at the children's table because she belongs with the children! She pulled your name out of thin air to save face!"

Kieran tilted his head, his expression darkening into something genuinely terrifying.

"A nobody?" Kieran repeated softly. He stepped back to Mara’s side, casually sliding a heavy, warm arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. The contact sent a jolt of electricity straight down her spine. "Celeste, isn't it? Let me educate you on something about the Chicago business world. The shop on Clover Street sits on land my firm has been trying to acquire for three years. Do you know why we haven't bought it?"

He paused, letting the heavy silence build.

"Because Mara Ellison refused every single multi-million dollar offer I put on her desk. She owns the block. Which means," Kieran swept his gaze across the terrified faces of the elite, "every single one of you is currently standing on soil owned by my future wife."
