Chapter 7 - The Symphony GalaThe grand limestone steps of the Chicago Symphony Center were blinding under the flashing lights of paparazzi cameras and television crews. Sleek black limousines discharged Chicago’s elite in a continuous, glittering parade of diamonds, silk, and tailored wool.

Mara Ellison stood inside the warm interior of a idling town car, staring down at her reflection in the vanity mirror with absolute disbelief.
The dress—delivered to her apartment two days prior by an anonymous courier with a black embossed card—was a masterpiece of haute couture. A midnight-blue silk velvet gown that hugged her curves with liquid grace, featuring a subtle sweetheart neckline and a high slit that hinted at designer strappy heels she had never imagined wearing. Her hair had been styled by a professional team into cascading, polished waves, and a pair of sapphire drop earrings caught the ambient light like captured stars.
She looked less like a baker from Clover Street and more like royalty.
The car door swung open.
Kieran Vale offered his hand. His palm was warm, strong, and impossibly steady as he helped her step out onto the red carpet.
As soon as Mara’s heels touched the concrete, a wall of camera flashes erupted with deafening intensity.
“Mr. Vale! Mr. Vale, over here!”
“Who is your stunning date?”
“Is it true Vale Holdings is expanding into residential acquisitions?”
Mara instinctively flinched, her shoulders tensing as the blinding lights pierced her eyes. But before she could falter, Kieran’s arm wrapped firmly around her waist, pulling her smoothly against his side. His touch was grounding, anchoring her amidst the chaotic storm of media attention.
He didn't rush. He paused for three deliberate seconds, allowing the cameras to capture them together, before guiding her effortlessly up the grand staircase.
As they entered the soaring marble lobby of the Symphony Center, the ambient chatter of Chicago’s highest society hummed around them. Prominent politicians, tech moguls, real estate magnates, and socialites filled the hall, holding crystal flutes of champagne.
And right near the center bar, standing among a group of prominent local investors, was Aunt Celeste, Uncle Bernard, and Gavin.
Celeste was mid-sentence, laughing airily, when her eyes drifted toward the grand entrance.
She froze. Her glass of champagne slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp, echoing crash.
The surrounding conversation sputtered and died.
Celeste stared, her face draining of all color, her jaw slack. Beside her, Gavin turned around, his expression shifting from mild boredom to absolute, unadulterated horror.
Kieran didn't even break his stride. He guided Mara right past them, his dark gaze cutting over Celeste and Gavin with freezing, absolute indifference.
As they walked past, Kieran leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of Mara's ear so softly that only she could hear.

"Smile, love," he murmured, a dark, wicked edge to his voice. "Show them who owns the room."
Mara looked up into Kieran’s eyes, a thrilling wave of power washing away every lingering insecurity. She lifted her chin, offered a radiant, blinding smile to the crowd, and walked into the grand hall on the arm of the most powerful man in Chicago.
