Chapter 12 - The Iron CEOOn the 35th floor of the newly rebranded Aegis Infrastructure & Tech, the atmosphere was electric. The glass-walled offices hummed with a renewed, ferocious energy. Gone was the bloated, toxic corporate culture of Daniel’s era; in its place was a lean, hyper-efficient machine built on absolute transparency.

I sat at the massive curved mahogany desk that once belonged to my ex-husband. My hair was pulled back into a sleek, sharp ponytail, and I wore a tailored charcoal blazer. On my desk, alongside a sleek monitor displaying municipal infrastructure metrics, sat a small, framed architectural sketch of our first breakthrough project.

My executive assistant, Marcus—a brilliant compliance director who had survived the corporate purge because of his unyielding integrity—knocked twice before stepping in.

“Boss, Arthur Vance is on line two,” Marcus said, a slight grin playing at the corner of his mouth. “He’s coordinating with the federal prosecutors regarding the financial discrepancies Daniel left behind. They’re looking at serious white-collar charges, and a plea deal is completely off the table.”

I spun my gold fountain pen between my fingers, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling Chicago skyline under a bright spring sun.

“Tell Arthur to hand over every single financial record to the DOJ,” I instructed calmly, my voice steady. “I want no loose ends. Daniel built his entire facade on sand. It’s time the foundation washed away completely.”

“Understood,” Marcus nodded, turning to leave before pausing. “By the way, the board meeting for the municipal transit expansion is at 3:00 PM. Are you ready?”

“Always,” I replied softly, standing up and smoothing my jacket. “Some things are worth more than a billion-dollar valuation—they’re worth protecting.”
