Chapter 16 - The Courtroom VerdictJuly arrived with heavy, humid Chicago heat.

The federal trial for Daniel Sterling lasted exactly four days. The evidence was so overwhelming, the financial trails so meticulously mapped by Aegis’s internal auditors, that the jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.

I didn't attend the trial. I didn't need to sit in the public gallery to watch his downfall. I was too busy reviewing architectural drafts for our next regional expansion.

At 4:00 PM, my phone buzzed with a notification from Arthur Vance:

Guilty on all twelve counts. Judge handed down ten years federal minimum without parole. It’s over, Emily.

I stared at the screen for three quiet seconds, then locked my phone and slid it into my desk drawer.

Ten years. Exactly the amount of time I had spent believing that love meant enduring humiliation, unappreciated labor, and silent betrayal.

The ledger was balanced. The debt was paid in full.
