Chapter 2 - The General’s ReturnThe reception hall of the Whitmore estate—usually a sanctuary of quiet luxury, fine crystal, and hushed classical music—felt like a war zone.

Two hours after the disastrous funeral service, the heavy oak double doors banged open. Eleanor, having recovered enough of her venom through pure fury, marched into the grand foyer followed by a weeping Chloe and two private security guards she had hastily hired out of pocket.
"Get them out!" Eleanor screamed, pointing at the moving boxes stacking up near the sweeping staircase. "Throw every single one of her cheap bags out on the gravel! This house belongs to the Whitmore bloodline!"
"Actually, Mrs. Whitmore, it doesn't," a crisp, authoritative voice echoed from the top of the stairs.
Eleanor stopped dead in her tracks.
Standing on the landing was Sarah, but the plain mourning dress was gone. In its place was a freshly pressed, immaculate U.S. Army dress uniform. On the shoulders gleamed the silver stars of a Brigadier General. The rows of ribbons and badges pinned to her chest caught the chandelier light, blazing like medals of absolute authority.
Chloe dropped a stack of her own designer magazines, her jaw dropping. "You... you're..."
"A Brigadier General," Sarah finished for her, walking down the stairs with a rhythmic, measured cadence that commanded the entire room. Every footstep echoed like a gunshot against the marble floor. "Director of Special Operations Logistics. And, as of twenty minutes ago when the Department of Defense verified my emergency domestic deployment orders, the temporary federal custodian of this property."
Eleanor’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. "You lied to us! You said you were just a logistics analyst! You trapped my son with a fake identity!"
"David knew exactly who I was," Sarah said, stopping three steps from the bottom, towering over them. "He loved me for it. He was the only civilian outside the Pentagon who knew my true rank. He also knew that the moment he died, you would circle like vultures to devour his estate and destroy our child."
Sterling Brooks stepped out from the study, carrying a thick binder stamped with government seals. He didn't even look at Eleanor; his attention was entirely on Sarah.
"General Whitmore," Sterling said formally, handing her a digital tablet. "The corporate board of Whitmore Industries has been notified of your emergency assumption of the controlling voting block. Furthermore, the federal investigation into your mother-in-law’s bribery of the medical laboratory has already been initiated."
Eleanor’s private security guards slowly took a step back, looking at the stars on Sarah’s shoulders and the legal documents in Sterling's hands. They quietly backed out the front door, abandoning ship.
"You can't do this to us!" Chloe wailed, breaking down into hysterical tears. "We have nowhere to go! Our accounts are frozen!"
"You have twenty-four hours to pack your personal belongings," Sarah said, her voice devoid of any warmth or mercy. "After that, the locks change, and federal marshals will escort you off the premises."
Eleanor lunged forward, her nails clawing the air, blinded by sheer rage. "You bitch! You stole my son, you stole his wealth, and now you—"
Before Eleanor’s fingers could even brush Sarah's sleeve, Sarah caught her wrist with a lightning-fast grip, twisting it just enough to immobilize her without exerting full force. Decades of hand-to-hand combat training made the movement effortless.
Sarah leaned in close, her eyes locking onto Eleanor’s terrified gaze.

"Listen to me very carefully," Sarah whispered, her voice like ice grinding over stone. "David's car crash wasn't an accident. And if you think I'm going to let you walk away after trying to brand my son a bastard... you severely underestimated who you were dealing with."
Eleanor froze, the color draining entirely from her face. "What... what did you say?"
