Chapter 6 - The Confession in the DarkThe holding cell in the federal detention facility was stark, lit only by a single fluorescent bulb humming softly overhead.

Marcus Thorne sat at the metal interrogation table, his expensive designer suit rumpled, his hands cuffed to a steel bolt in the center of the table. The cocky, untouchable corporate titan from the penthouse was gone, replaced by a desperate man staring down the barrel of a life sentence without parole.

The heavy steel door swung open.

Sarah walked in, carrying a single manila folder. She didn't sit down immediately. She stood by the door, watching him with an unreadable, piercing gaze.

"You're destroying a multi-billion-dollar empire over a personal vendetta, General," Marcus muttered, his voice raspy, trying to maintain a shred of dignity. "The board will tear you apart in civil court."

"The board?" Sarah asked quietly, walking over and tossing the manila folder onto the metal table. It slid across the surface and stopped right in front of him. "Look inside, Marcus."

Marcus hesitation-filled fingers opened the folder. Inside were printed transcripts of every encrypted text message, email, and wire transfer between him, Eleanor, and Viktor Vance spanning the last two years.

"Every transaction," Sarah said, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite him, her elbows resting on the table. "Every offshore shell company. Every bribe paid to the St. Jude’s Medical Laboratory technician to swap the DNA files. It’s all here."

Marcus swallowed hard, his throat dry. "Eleanor... Eleanor was the one who wanted you gone. She couldn't stand the thought of David's fortune leaving the family line. I just... I just facilitated the logistics."

"You pushed the button," Sarah corrected him, her voice chillingly calm. "You helped murder my husband. And for that, there is no corporate bailout, Marcus. There is no plea bargain."

Before Marcus could answer, the observation glass on the side of the room flickered, and Sterling Brooks walked into the room through the side door, holding a secure encrypted tablet.

"General," Sterling said, nodding respectfully. "We just received a priority dispatch from the Geneva federal prosecutor's office. Viktor Vance didn't just get intercepted at the tarmac."

Marcus’s head snapped up, his eyes wide with horror. "What are you talking about?"

"Viktor cracked the moment local authorities presented him with the extradition papers," Sterling continued, looking directly at Marcus. "He handed over the master recording of your phone call with him on the night of the accident—the call where you explicitly instructed him to arm the micro-detonator on David's car."

The color drained entirely from Marcus’s face. He slumped back into his chair, the last ounce of fight evaporating from his body.

"It's over, Marcus," Sarah said, standing up and buttoning her uniform jacket. "You wanted the Whitmore empire. Instead, you bought yourself a lifetime in a maximum-security federal penitentiary."

As Sarah turned to walk out of the interrogation room, Sterling held his breath for a moment, then leaned in to whisper something to her in the hallway.

"General... there's one more thing. The investigators checked Eleanor’s personal safe deposit box at the downtown national bank. They found something else. Something that goes far beyond corporate espionage."

Sarah stopped in her tracks, turning back to look at Sterling. "What did they find?"
