Chapter 8 - The Empty ThroneThe grand foyer of the Whitmore estate was completely silent when Sarah walked through the front doors.

The moving boxes were gone. The luxurious Persian rugs had been rolled up, and the crystal chandelier cast a cold, muted light over the marble floor. Sitting on a single wooden chair near the door was Eleanor Whitmore.

She looked ten years older. Her designer clothes were rumpled, her hair unstyled, and her hands were clasped tightly in her lap. The moment she heard Sarah’s boots, she looked up. There was no defiance left in her eyes—only a hollow, defeated exhaustion.

"Marcus confessed," Sarah said, stopping a few feet away from her former mother-in-law.

Eleanor didn't flinch. She gave a bitter, humorless laugh, staring down at the floor. "Of course he did. Marcus was always a coward when the walls started closing in."

"He told us everything about the corporate sabotage, the brakes, and the bribe," Sarah continued, her voice devoid of emotion. "He also told us about Safety Deposit Box 409."

Eleanor went completely still. Her head snapped up, her eyes wide with shock and sudden, desperate terror. "You... you found the adoption papers?"

"I know that David wasn't your son," Sarah said quietly. "I know you used him as an instrument to secure an inheritance you had no legal right to. And I know you and Marcus conspired to murder him."

Eleanor stood up slowly, her legs shaking slightly. She didn't deny it. Instead, a strange, manic smile crept onto her lips.

"You think you won, don't you?" Eleanor whispered, stepping closer to Sarah. "You think because you have the badges, the uniform, and the federal warrants, you've secured your little family dynasty?"

"I secured justice," Sarah replied firmly.

"Justice?" Eleanor laughed, a sharp, piercing sound that echoed off the high ceiling. "David was never safe in this family, Sarah! From the moment he found out the truth about his adoption—from the moment he threatened to expose my real family's debts—he was a marked man. And your son? Your precious unborn baby? You think he'll ever inherit a peaceful empire? The moment you step outside these gates, the creditors, the syndicates, and the remaining board members will tear you and your child apart!"

Sarah didn't back down. She stepped directly into Eleanor’s space, towering over her with the commanding presence of a general who had stared down enemy combatants on the front lines.

"You talk about enemies, Eleanor," Sarah said softly, her voice carrying a terrifying, absolute certainty. "You spent your whole life plotting, betraying, and murdering for power. You never understood what real strength was."

Sarah placed one hand gently over her eight-month pregnant belly, her eyes locking onto Eleanor’s trembling pupils.

"I buried my husband. I faced your lies, your forged reports, and your assassins. And right now, as we speak, federal marshals are seizing every last penny of the Whitmore and Thorne estates, locking them away in a secure government trust that not a single soul can touch."

Eleanor staggered backward, clutching her chest as the full weight of her total, absolute ruin finally crushed her. "No... no..."

"Your game is over, Eleanor," Sarah said, turning her back on her. "Pack your remaining bags. The federal marshals are outside to escort you to your new permanent residence."
