Chapter 5 - The Midnight BoardroomThe penthouse boardroom of Thorne Global Logistics gleamed with polished chrome, floor-to-ceiling glass panels, and a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline.

It was 1:00 AM, but Marcus Thorne was wide awake, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old scotch as he stared out at the glittering lights below. The door unlocked with a soft chime, and Eleanor Whitmore hurried inside, her designer coat disheveled, her face flushed with panic.

"We are ruined, Marcus!" Eleanor hissed, slamming her handbag onto the glass conference table. "That bitch of a daughter-in-law seized the estate, locked us out of the east wing, and brought in federal investigators! The entire board is whispering!"

Marcus didn’t turn around immediately. He took a slow sip of his scotch, a cold, mocking smile playing on his lips. "Calm down, Eleanor. Panic is bad for your complexion. Everything is going according to plan."

"Plan?!" Eleanor shrieked, marching up to him and grabbing his arm. "She has the corporate voting block! She’s investigating the lab bribe! And I heard rumors that the military police found something in David’s car wreckage! If she connects us to the brakes..."

"She won't connect anything," Marcus interrupted, turning around with a chilling calmness. He set his glass down on the marble bar. "Viktor is already in Geneva. By sunrise, the final tranches of the Whitmore holding accounts will be funneled through three layers of cryptocurrency mixers. Once the money is laundered, Sarah Whitmore will be standing in an empty corporate shell with no funds to fight us."

Eleanor breathed a shaky sigh of relief, though her hands were still trembling. "Are you sure? If she finds out—"

"She won't find out anything," a smooth, unfamiliar voice echoed from the shadows near the private elevator.

Marcus and Eleanor both froze.

The private elevator doors slid open with a soft ping. Standing inside wasn't an office worker or a security guard.

It was Sarah Whitmore.

Flanked by two armed federal marshals in tactical gear, Sarah stepped out into the penthouse boardroom. Her boots clicked rhythmically against the polished floor. She wasn't wearing her coat anymore; her uniform jacket was buttoned tightly, the Brigadier General stars gleaming under the modern chandelier lights.

Marcus’s face drained of color, his scotch glass slipping from his fingers and shattering against the marble floor. "How... how did you get up here? The biometric security—"

"Biometric security requires a high-level master override," Sarah said smoothly, walking toward the conference table. She reached into her pocket and dropped a sleek, black military-grade hardware key onto the glass surface. "Which your security system kindly downloaded when my tactical team tapped your mainframe ten minutes ago."

Eleanor stumbled backward, her back hitting the glass wall. "You... you can't be here! This is private corporate property! You're trespassing!"

"I am not trespassing," Sarah replied, stopping three feet away from Marcus. She looked him dead in the eye, her expression as cold as deep space. "I am executing a federal asset-seizure warrant under the National Defense Security Act, backed by direct orders from the Department of Defense."

Marcus tried to regain his composure, forcing a tight, nervous smile. "General Whitmore... there must be some misunderstanding. This is a private corporate matter. You have no jurisdiction over international logistics firms without a formal SEC filing."

"SEC?" Sarah smiled, a terrifyingly sharp expression. "Marcus, you didn't just commit corporate fraud. You utilized a military-grade C-4 micro-detonator to commit premeditated murder against a civilian citizen who happened to hold a high-level defense security clearance."

Marcus’s eyes widened in sudden, raw panic. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."

"Viktor Vance confessed three minutes ago," Sarah lied smoothly, watching the flicker of absolute terror cross Marcus’s face. "Interpol intercepted him at the Geneva tarmac before he could board the connecting flight to Zurich. He gave us the encrypted ledger, the financial transfers, and the exact code of the explosive trigger."

Marcus lunged toward the mahogany desk drawer, his hand diving inside to grab a hidden panic button.

In a fraction of a second, Sarah moved with blinding speed. Before Marcus’s fingers could graze the button, she vaulted over the edge of the conference table, slammed her palm down on his wrist, and pinned him flat against the glass surface with a crushing arm-lock.

"Don't," Sarah whispered right into his ear, her voice dripping with lethal intent. "You’ve already played your last hand."
