Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of SinsThe private vault of the downtown national bank was cold, silent, and heavily fortified.

Sarah and Sterling stood before Safety Deposit Box 409 as a bank executive carefully turned the dual-key mechanism. The heavy metal drawer slid open, revealing a thick stack of old documents, vintage photographs, and a sealed legal envelope stamped with a red wax seal dated thirty years ago.

Sterling picked up the envelope, using cotton gloves, and carefully extracted a single sheet of weathered yellowed paper. He scanned the text, and his eyes widened behind his glasses.

"General... you need to see this," Sterling murmured, handing the paper to Sarah.

Sarah took the document. Her eyes scanned the first few lines, and for the first time since David’s funeral, her composure nearly broke.

It was a birth certificate and an adoption decree from thirty-five years ago.

"David wasn't Eleanor’s biological son," Sarah whispered, the words hanging heavily in the cold vault air. "He was adopted in secret when he was six months old. And his biological parents..."

"...were Arthur and Lillian Vance," Sterling finished, pointing to the names at the bottom of the document. "Marcus Thorne's maternal uncle and aunt."

Sarah stared at the paper, the terrifying, bizarre puzzle pieces suddenly snapping into a horrific alignment.

"Eleanor never loved David," Sarah realized aloud, a cold wave washing over her. "She adopted him because her late husband’s will stipulated that the multi-billion-dollar inheritance could only be accessed if there was a direct male heir. When David grew up, realized her financial embezzlement, and threatened to cut her off, she didn't just want to steal his empire—she and Marcus were trying to reclaim what they believed was their family fortune all along."

Sterling nodded grimly. "And when you came along—a high-ranking military officer carrying David’s biological child—you threatened to lock their stolen legacy away forever. That's why they targeted you with the fake DNA report. They needed to delegitimize your son so they could seize the entire trust through probate law."

Sarah folded the document slowly, sliding it back into the envelope. The grief she had carried for days transformed into a cold, unstoppable force of nature.

"They played a high-stakes game of deception," Sarah said, her voice steady and resolute. "They thought they were dealing with a grieving widow they could easily crush."

She turned around, walking out of the vault with the heavy, rhythmic stride of a general heading into the final phase of a decisive battle.

"Let's go pay Eleanor a visit."
