Chapter 12 - A New SunriseBack in Chicago, the autumn chill gave way to the crisp, bright morning of a brand-new season.

I stood on the balcony of our penthouse, watching the sun rise over Lake Michigan. The water shimmered like molten gold, casting warm, dancing reflections across the living room floor.
The doorbell rang.
I walked down the hall and opened the door. There was no one standing there, but a neat cardboard package rested on the welcome mat.
I picked it up, carried it inside, and used a kitchen knife to slice through the packing tape. Inside was a framed certificate from the Chicago Board of Education, along with a handwritten note from the school principal.
Sophie had won first place in the city-wide elementary art competition.
Her winning entry—the very picture she had drawn of our castle—was printed right on the front of the official program.
A moment later, little footsteps padded down the hallway. Sophie appeared, rubbing her eyes sleepily, wearing her favorite dinosaur pajamas and her bright pink slippers.
"Mommy? Is breakfast ready?" she asked, yawning softly.
I knelt down, holding up the framed certificate and the program featuring her artwork.
Sophie’s eyes went wide. She gasped, clapping her hands together with uncontainable joy. "My castle! Look! It made the cover!"
"It did, sweetheart," I whispered, pulling her into a tight, fierce embrace, kissing the top of her head right over the silvery scar that marked her survival. "You're a star."
"Does this mean we can have vanilla cake for breakfast?" she asked hopefully, looking up at me with a mischievous grin.
I laughed—a bright, beautiful, unburdened laugh that echoed through our home, chasing away every ghost of the past.

"Only if you eat your eggs first," I smiled.
As we walked together toward the kitchen, the sunlight poured through the windows, bathing us in warmth. The wolves were gone. The past was buried. And our future was brighter than we had ever dreamed.
