Chapter 3 - The Cold Truth on 4KThe paramedics moved swiftly, kneeling beside me on the marble floor. One of them gently lifted Sophie’s chin while shining a penlight into her eyes.

"Hey there, sweetie," the paramedic said softly, wearing a reassuring smile. "What’s your name?"

"Sophie," she whispered, her lip trembling. "My head hurts, mister."

"I know it does, brave girl. We’re going to get you all fixed up. Let’s get a sterile bandage on this laceration right away."

As they carefully lifted Sophie onto the gurney, securing her neck and applying pressure to her head wound, Detective Vance turned his attention to the hotel security chief, a stout man named Miller who looked intensely uncomfortable being caught in the middle of a high-society war.

"You got the footage?" Detective Vance asked.

"Yes, Detective," the security chief replied, opening his leather portfolio and pulling out a ruggedized tablet linked directly to the hotel’s central server room. "The Whitmore Hotel ballroom is outfitted with twelve synchronized 4K ultra-HD cameras with audio capture. The entrance camera has a direct, unobstructed angle of the head table, the gift station, and the aisle where the incident occurred."

Across the room, Preston stopped struggling against Officer Miller. His breathing hitched.

"Don't look at it," my mother sobbed, clutching my father's sleeve. "Arthur, tell them it's forged! It's deepfake technology! Everyone knows hackers can manipulate videos nowadays!"

"Shut her up," Detective Vance ordered without looking back. "Chief, queue it up. Let's play it on the big screen."

He pointed toward the multimedia projection screen at the front of the ballroom—the same screen that, only an hour ago, had been displaying a heartwarming slideshow of Preston and his bride growing up, carefully omitting any mention of me or my struggles.

The security chief tapped rapidly on his tablet. The projection flickered from a glowing monogram of Preston and his new wife to a crystal-clear, timestamped video feed of the ballroom, dated tonight at exactly 8:14 PM.

The entire room fell dead silent. Two hundred pairs of eyes locked onto the screen.

On the video, the reception was in full swing. Guests were seated, clinking glasses. The camera angle showed our table—located near the back corner—where Sophie sat quietly swinging her legs, nibbling on her vanilla cake.

Then, the video tracked Preston.

He was seen standing near the bar, speaking quietly with a groomsman. Then, his eyes locked onto our table.

On the audio feed—crystal clear, picking up every nuance through the ambient room noise—Preston could be heard muttering to his groomsman: "Watch this. I'm going to finish what Mom and Dad started. I'm going to make sure that leech and her brat are permanently expelled from this family once and for all."

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Several of my mother’s society friends covered their mouths in horror.

My father stared at the screen, his face turning ghostly pale. "That... that's out of context. He was joking—"

"Quiet," Detective Vance snapped.

On the screen, Preston was seen walking purposefully away from the bar. As he passed our table, while everyone’s attention was turned toward the string quartet, Preston slowed his pace.

With lightning-fast sleight of hand, he reached into his own tuxedo jacket, pulled out his titanium iPhone, and slipped it directly into the pocket of Sophie’s little denim jacket, which was draped over the back of her chair while she ate her cake.

Two minutes later, the video showed Preston grabbing the wireless microphone, slamming his hand against the podium, and screaming that his phone had been stolen—marching straight to our table to "discover" it in my daughter's pocket.

The video played on, showing the exact moment Preston grabbed the oak menu board, hoisted it over his head, and brought it down on my daughter's head with sickening force.

The audio captured the wet, sickening crunch of impact, followed by Sophie’s helpless scream.

No one spoke. The proof was absolute, undeniable, and broadcast in vivid high-definition to every single person in the room.

Preston slumped forward against the cake table, his defiance completely shattered.

Detective Vance walked over, clicked his cuffs tighter around Preston's wrists, and yanked him upright.

"Preston Whitmore," Detective Vance said loudly, reading him his rights with bone-chilling precision. "You are under arrest for aggravated battery of a minor, child endangerment, filing a false police report, and evidence tampering. You have the right to remain silent..."

As they hauled my brother toward the exit, he caught my eye one last time.

There was no arrogance left. Only blind, trembling panic.

And as the heavy doors closed behind him, I realized the golden cage my family had built around him had just collapsed into dust.
