Chapter 14 - The New FoundationTwo weeks after my mother's visit, a sleek black town car pulled up outside our penthouse.

Detective Vance stepped out, wearing his signature sharp suit, holding a thick manila folder under his arm. When I let him in, he greeted Sophie with a warm high-five and a comic book he had picked up for her before heading over to the kitchen island.
"Well, Evelyn," Vance said, opening the folder to reveal a stack of official legal documents. "The federal asset forfeiture division has concluded its liquidation of the remaining Whitmore estate holdings."
I poured him a cup of coffee and leaned against the counter. "And?"
"And after settling all corporate debts, victim restitution funds, and back taxes, there was a significant residue left over in the receivership account," Vance explained, sliding a certified document across the marble counter. "As the primary whistleblower who unlocked the hidden offshore server vaults, you’re entitled to a substantial corporate informant payout. Plus, your civil judgment against the hotel group was settled out of court yesterday for a seven-figure sum."
I looked down at the numbers on the paper. It was more wealth than my father had ever accumulated through his fraudulent schemes—clean, legal, and entirely earned through truth and resilience.
"What are you going to do with it, Mom?" Sophie asked, skipping into the kitchen with her empty cereal bowl, her bright pink slippers padding softly against the floor.
I knelt down, brushing a stray lock of hair away from her forehead, right over her faded scar.
"Well, sweetie," I smiled, pulling her close. "We're going to set up a college fund for you. And... I’m thinking of starting a foundation. A safe haven and legal defense fund for families who have been silenced, bullied, or abused by powerful people who think their last name makes them above the law."
Sophie’s eyes lit up. "Can we call it the Sophie Castle Foundation?"
May you like
"We sure can," I laughed, kissing her cheek.
Vance smiled warmly, watching us. "Preston thought he was building an empire that would last forever. But all he really did was clear the ground so you could build something real."
