Chapter 10 - The Final VaultI stared down at the small black USB drive lying on the floor, then back up at Eleanor’s tear-streaked face.

The ghosts of the past weren't just haunting my family; they had left a trail of financial wreckage and hidden crimes that went far deeper than anyone had realized.
"Why bring this to me?" I asked, my voice guarded. "Why not take it straight to the FBI?"
"Because the FBI wouldn't believe a word I said without an insider to authenticate the encryption keys," Eleanor replied softly, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her coat. "And because you were the only one in that entire ballroom who had the courage to look him in the eye and say 'No.' I needed to know that someone who actually stands for justice has the truth in their hands."
She took a slow step backward down the hallway.
"I'm leaving Chicago tonight, Evelyn," she added, her voice barely audible. "I’m changing my name, starting over somewhere far away. I don't expect you to ever forgive me. But I couldn't live another day carrying his secrets."
With that, she turned and walked down the corridor toward the elevators, her footsteps fading into the quiet hum of the building.
I slowly unlatched the safety chain, opened the door, and picked up the flash drive. It felt cold and heavy in the palm of my hand—a tiny piece of plastic containing the power to bury whatever remained of Preston’s wretched legacy once and for all.
Ten minutes later, I sat at my home office desk, inserting the USB drive into my laptop.
A password prompt popped up instantly.
I stared at the blinking cursor. What would Preston use as a master encryption key? His birthday? No, too obvious. Our father's name? Too cliché.
Then, I remembered the smug, arrogant look on his face the night he planted the phone in my daughter's pocket. The absolute belief that he was invincible.
I typed in a phrase from our childhood—the arrogant motto our parents had drilled into us every single day: UNTOUCHABLE_GOLDEN_BOY_2026.
Click.
The folder tree unlocked instantly.
Files began populating the screen. Hundreds of them. Shell companies in the Cayman Islands, fraudulent wire transfers draining the company pension funds, and—buried deep within a hidden subfolder labeled Insurance—secret audio recordings of Preston bragging about how easily he manipulated our parents into funding his lavish lifestyle while blaming me for every family failure.
There was even a recorded phone call between Preston and an unknown co-conspirator, plotting to frame me for corporate embezzlement years ago—the very scandal that had forced me out of the company in the first place.
The puzzle pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity. Every hardship I had faced, every ounce of rejection from my parents, every tear I had shed thinking I was the failure of the family... had all been engineered by my golden-boy brother.

I didn't hesitate. I picked up my phone and dialed Detective Vance’s direct line.
"Detective," I said, my voice steady, calm, and filled with absolute resolve. "I think you’re going to want to reopen Preston Whitmore’s file. I found the rest of the vault."
