CHAPTER 2 — The Ring Everyone Ignored

Christian ordered every entrance sealed.

No one entered.

No one left.

Not even members of his own organization.

Amara watched from the library window as black SUVs rolled through the estate while armed security quietly took positions around the property.

She had expected criminals.

Instead she found discipline.

Precision.

Rules.

Everything Victor had never possessed.

That afternoon Dr. Bennett returned to change the bandages covering her ribs.

As he carefully examined her swollen wrist, his fingers paused.

"May I see your wedding ring?"

Amara hesitated.

"It's worthless."

"I didn't ask its value."

She slowly removed it.

The elderly doctor turned it beneath the light.

Then frowned.

"This isn't a wedding ring."

Christian looked over immediately.

"What do you mean?"

Dr. Bennett pressed a hidden notch beneath the band.

Click.

The ring opened.

Inside...

A tiny encrypted microchip.

Everyone froze.

Amara stared in horror.

"I've never seen that before."

Christian's eyes narrowed.

"No..."

"You've been wearing it for years."

Diane immediately locked the study doors.

Christian placed the ring inside a velvet cloth.

"This explains everything."

Amara looked confused.

"I don't understand."

Christian spoke quietly.

"Someone hid information on your hand."

"And your husband never realized you still had it."

Minutes later, Christian's cyber-security expert arrived.

The chip contained encrypted files.

Bank accounts.

Names of judges.

Police captains.

Shipping manifests.

Money laundering routes stretching from Seattle to Vancouver.

But one folder shocked even Christian.

Its title contained only one word.

"HADES."

The files listed dozens of politicians, businessmen, and crime bosses.

Including...

Christian Hayes.

Amara looked horrified.

"That's impossible."

Christian's face became unreadable.

"No."

"It means someone has been collecting information on everyone."

Then another discovery appeared.

One final video.

Recorded four years earlier.

A frightened man stared into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...I'm already dead."

"My name is Michael Bennett."

Amara gasped.

"My father..."

Christian turned sharply.

"You told me your father died in a factory accident."

"I believed he did."

The man on the screen continued.

"If my daughter ever receives the ring..."

"...tell her never to trust Victor."

"He married her to get this evidence."

Amara collapsed into her chair.

Everything.

The marriage.

The beatings.

The years of control.

It had never been about love.

She had been nothing more than a living safe.

Before anyone could speak—

Every light inside the mansion went dark.

The emergency generators failed.

Then...

A single explosion echoed through the forest outside.

Diane reached for her weapon.

"They're here."

Christian calmly chambered a pistol.

"No..."

May you like

He looked toward the front gates.

"They brought an army."
