Chapter 2 - THE LION’S DEN

The Lake Manor Estates did not look like a home. It looked like a medieval fortress reimagined by a paranoid modern billionaire. High stone walls, thermal security cameras sweeping the snow-covered perimeter, and armed guards in dark tactical gear patrolling the gates.

Dante’s black SUV slammed through the iron gates, its tires screeching on the ice.

Abby sat in the backseat, her hands wrapped around a dry towel, trying to stop the bleeding from Dante’s shoulder. He hadn't groaned once, though his face was pale and sweat beaded on his forehead despite the freezing temperature. Clara sat next to them, clutching her purse like a lifeline.

“In here,” Dante muttered as the vehicle pulled into a heated underground garage.

Within minutes, Abby was ushered into a massive, cavernous living room. The warmth of a roaring fireplace hit her, but she couldn't stop shaking. A private doctor was already waiting, immediately taking Dante into an adjacent room to treat his gunshot wound.

Abby was left standing on a priceless Persian rug, covered in soot, dried blood, and melted snow.

“You should sit, child,” Clara said softly, setting her purse on a mahogany coffee table.

“You lied to me,” Abby said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. She didn't care about the grandeur of the room or the armed guards standing at the doors. “You played the frail old woman. You brought a war to my doorstep.”

Clara sighed, looking older than her years. “If I had sent Dante’s men, you would have run. If I had contacted you by phone, the Bureau would have intercepted it. I needed you to see the truth. I needed you to see that the monsters who took your life are still hunting you.”

Clara opened her purse and pulled out a sleek, silver USB drive. It was scratched, heavy, and wore a military-grade encryption seal.

“This contains the financial ledger of the Bianchi family, but more importantly, it contains the names of the active FBI agents on their payroll,” Clara explained. “But it is double-encrypted. The final key—the passcode to unlock the witness safety archives—is something only you know.”

Abby frowned. “I don't know any codes. I was a court stenographer, Clara. I just typed what I heard.”

“You didn't just type,” Dante’s voice cut through the room.

He walked back in, his shoulder tightly bandaged under a fresh black shirt. His face was still pale, but his posture was commanding. “You took down the deposition of Arthur Bianchi’s personal accountant before he was murdered in protective custody. The accountant gave you a sequence of numbers disguised as court record cross-references. He told you to remember them.”

Abby’s mind raced back three years. A cold, sweating man in a sterile room, whispering to her while the lawyers were out of the room: “Remember the page numbers, Abigail. 11, 42, 88, 9. Don’t let them change the record.”

“I thought he was just delirious,” Abby whispered, her stomach dropping.

“He was giving you the master key,” Dante said, stepping closer. The intensity in his amber eyes was suffocating. “Which means you are the most valuable asset in the country right now. To me, to the feds, and to the Bianchis.”

Before Abby could respond, the security monitors on the wall flashed red.

A guard rushed into the room, his face pale. “Sir, we have a breach. It’s not the Bianchis. It’s a federal tactical unit. They have a warrant for the arrest of Abigail Reynolds on charges of treason and harboring a fugitive.”

Dante’s jaw tightened. He looked at Abby, then at the USB on the table.

“They aren't here to arrest you,” Dante said quietly, drawing his spare weapon. “They’re here to make sure you never speak again. And my own security team... someone opened the outer gate from the inside.”

Abby realized with a jolt of horror: There was a mole inside the Rosetta estate.
