Chapter 6 - THE ULTIMATE VERDICT

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”Facebook Headline: THE TWIST ENDING NO ONE SAW COMING! ABBY’S REAL IDENTITY REVEALED IN THE ULTIMATE REVENGE! 🤯💥

Three Weeks LaterThe spring thaw had begun early in Vermont. The snow was melting into the green valleys, and the Pinewood Diner was being rebuilt, its new chrome stools already sparkling under the morning sun.

Abby Carson sat at the counter, a cup of hot black coffee in front of her. She wore a simple jacket, her hair loose and free. For the first time in three years, she wasn't looking over her shoulder.

The bell above the door chimed.

Dante Rosetta walked in. He wore a clean charcoal suit, his shoulder fully healed. He looked around the clean, bright diner, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips.

He sat on the stool next to her.

“The new sign looks good,” Dante said softly.

“I kept it red,” Abby smiled. “A reminder.”

“The Bureau has finished its sweep,” Dante said, sliding a manila folder across the counter. “Leo’s contacts were exposed. Six high-ranking agents in the New York office have been indicted for conspiracy and bribery. The Bianchi family is facing a federal RICO trial that will dismantle them permanently.”

Abby looked at the folder but didn't open it. “And the USB?”

Dante chuckled. “The police divers never found it. They think it was lost in the lake currents.”

Abby smiled, reaching into her pocket. She pulled out a small, sleek silver object and set it on the counter between them.

The real USB drive.

“I dropped a decoy,” Abby whispered. “I figured if they thought the evidence was gone, they’d stop looking for it. But I decrypted it last night using the real code.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed in surprise, then softened with deep admiration. “And what did you find?”

“It wasn't just the Bianchis on that ledger, Dante,” Abby said, her voice dropping to a whisper. “The Rosetta family was on there, too. Your father... he wasn't framed by the Bianchis. He was working with them. He helped create the system that corrupt feds used to target people like me.”

Dante was silent for a long moment. He looked at the USB, then at Abby. The truth was out, cold and unyielding.

“Are you going to turn it in?” Dante asked.

Abby picked up the USB, letting it rest in the palm of her hand. She looked out the window at the beautiful, peaceful Vermont landscape.

“No,” she said. “Because the ledger also shows that the moment you took over the family, you shut those operations down. You protected your grandmother, and you protected me.”

She slid the USB across the counter into his hand.

“But if you ever step out of line, Dante,” Abby said, a playful but dangerous spark in her eyes, “remember... I still know how to type every single word.”

Dante laughed, his hand wrapping around hers. “I’ll keep that in mind, Abigail.”

Outside, the sun broke through the clouds, melting the last of the winter ice, leaving nothing but the clear, bright daylight of a new beginning.
