Chapter 4 - THE GHOST OF NEW YORK

“To beat a ghost, you have to become one.”Facebook Headline: A DEADLY TRAP AT THE FROZEN LAKE! CAN THEY SURVIVE THE ICE-COLD AMBUSH? ❄️🔫
The storm outside had turned the lake into a barren wasteland of white. The boathouse was a skeletal structure shaking against the freezing wind.
Dante had bound Leo’s hands with zip-ties, dragging him along as a hostage. Abby walked close to Dante, her hand slipped into his pocket, gripping his spare magazine. They had no choice but to push forward; the estate behind them was crawling with corrupt feds.
As they reached the edge of the frozen lake, the headlights of two snowmobiles pierced the dark.
“They’re here,” Dante muttered, pulling Abby behind a stack of frozen timber.
Three men stepped off the snowmobiles. They weren't feds. They wore the heavy leather jackets and expensive furs of the New York Bianchi syndicate. Leading them was Victor Bianchi—the younger brother of the man Abigail had testified against three years ago.
“Abigail!” Victor called out, his voice carrying over the wind. “Show yourself! We have the old lady! Let’s make a trade!”
Abby peeked around the timber. Two men were dragging Clara out of a black van parked near the boathouse. The old woman looked pale, her coat torn, but she kept her chin held high.
“If you touch her, Victor,” Dante shouted back, his voice echoing like thunder, “I will carve your family name out of every street in New York.”
“Dante!” Victor laughed. “You’re in no position to threaten me. You’re shot, your empire is compromised, and your precious witness is trapped. Give us the passcode, and we let the grandmother go.”
Abby looked at Dante. She saw the calculation in his eyes, the subtle way his hand hovered over his weapon. He was planning a suicide charge to save his grandmother.
“No,” Abby whispered, grabbing his arm. “I have a better plan.”
“Abby, they will kill you the moment they have the code,” Dante warned.
“They won't get the code,” she said, her eyes shining with a dangerous resolve. “I’m going to give them a fake one. But I need you to shoot the gas tank on that snowmobile when I give the signal.”
Before Dante could stop her, Abby stepped out from behind the timber, her hands raised.
“Victor!” she called out. “I’m here! Let Clara go, and I’ll give you the encryption key!”
Victor smirked, gesturing for his men to bring Clara forward. “Smart girl. Speak up. What’s the code?”
Abby walked slowly onto the thick ice of the lake, drawing Victor’s attention away from Dante. “The code is... 88, 42, 11, 9,” she said, reversing the numbers. “But it only works if you enter it into the master terminal at the New York courthouse database. If you enter it here, it triggers a self-destruct sequence on the USB.”
Victor frowned, pulling out a satellite phone. “Is she lying?” he barked at Leo, who was still tied up near the woodpile.
But Leo couldn't answer. Dante had already slipped behind him, using Leo’s body as a shield as he aimed his Beretta at the exposed fuel tank of the idling snowmobile.
“Now!” Abby screamed, throwing herself onto the ice.

BANG.
Dante’s bullet struck the fuel tank. The snowmobile erupted into a massive ball of orange fire, the shockwave shattering the thick ice beneath Victor’s men.
