Chapter 5 - BETRAYAL IN THE BLIZZARD

“The ice always cracks under the weight of the truth.”Facebook Headline: THE ICE CRACKS! A SHOCKING SACRIFICE ON THE FROZEN LAKE! 😱💔
The explosion turned the night sky bright orange. The ice groaned and popped, a jagged fissure instantly ripping across the frozen surface of the lake.
One of Victor’s men screamed as he plunged into the freezing black water, dragged down by his heavy gear. Victor fell backward, scrambling to his feet as the ice beneath him began to tilt.
“Kill her!” Victor roared, pointing at Abby.
The remaining hitman raised his weapon, but Dante was already moving. He fired twice, hitting the hitman in the chest. The man fell backward into the freezing lake.
But the ice was unstable. A loud CRACK echoed like a gunshot, and a massive fissure opened right between Abby and Dante.
“Abby! Grab my hand!” Dante yelled, stretching across the widening gap of freezing water.
Abby lunged, her fingers brushing his, but the ice shifted, and she slid backward toward the edge of the open water.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed her hood, hauling her backward.
It was Leo. He had somehow managed to cut his zip-ties using a sharp piece of metal from the timber pile. His face was bloody, his eyes wild with desperation. He dragged Abby toward the black van, holding a knife to her throat.
“It’s over, Dante!” Leo screamed. “She’s coming with me! The feds are almost here, and I’m taking my ticket out of this hellhole!”
Clara was lying on the ice nearby, struggling to get up. Dante stood on the opposite side of the fissure, unable to cross the widening gap of freezing water.
“Let her go, Leo,” Dante said, his voice deadly quiet. “There is nowhere you can run where I won't find you.”
“I don't need to run far,” Leo sneered, backing toward the van. “Just to the border.”
Abby felt the cold steel of the knife pressing into her throat. But she didn't feel the paralyzing fear she had felt three years ago. She felt a cold, deep rage. She looked at Dante, and in that split second, they shared a silent understanding.
Abby leaned her head back, slamming it hard into Leo’s broken nose.
Leo cried out, his grip loosening. Abby spun, grabbing his wrist and twisting it down, using a self-defense move she had practiced in secret for three years. She drove her elbow into his ribs, sending him stumbling backward onto a thin patch of ice.
CRACK.
The ice gave way.
Leo screamed as he fell through into the dark water. He reached out, grabbing the bumper of the van, his lower half submerged in the paralyzing cold. “Abby! Help me! Please!”
Abby stood at the edge of the hole, looking down at the man who had ruined her life. She held the silver USB drive, which she had quietly slipped from Clara’s pocket during the chaos.
“You wanted the truth, Leo?” Abby whispered. “Here it is.”
She dropped the USB... not into his hand, but directly into the freezing water beside him.

“No!” Leo gasped, diving forward to catch it, losing his grip on the bumper.
The dark currents of the lake swept him beneath the ice, his screams silenced by the frozen depths.
