Chapter 2 - The Secret in the Silver Spoon

A week had passed since Elena moved into the Vance Estate, and she quickly learned that the glittering world of billionaires was fueled by paranoia and dark secrets. Her sole duty was caring for Evelyn, a task she performed with deep devotion. She read to her, walked with her through the manicured gardens, and most importantly, helped her eat when her hands refused to cooperate.
But Elena wasn't just a compassionate caretaker; she was observant.
Every afternoon at exactly three o'clock, Victoria’s personal maid, a sour-faced woman named Marta, would bring up a special organic herbal tea for Evelyn. "A premium blend from Europe," Victoria had claimed proudly during a brief, tense interaction in the hallway. "Specially formulated to soothe neurological disorders."
However, Elena began to notice a terrifying pattern.
In the mornings, before the tea arrived, Evelyn’s mind was sharp, and her tremors were relatively manageable. But within thirty minutes of drinking that specific tea, Evelyn’s condition would deteriorate drastically. Her eyes would grow vacant, her speech would slur, and her hands would shake so violently that she could barely hold her chin up.
One afternoon, Elena decided to test her dark suspicion.
Marta brought the silver tray into the room, setting down the steaming porcelain cup. "Make sure she drinks every drop while it’s hot," Marta snapped before slipping out of the room.
Elena waited until the footsteps faded down the corridor. She looked at Evelyn, who was staring blankly at the wall. Elena took a small, clean glass vial from her pocket—one she had bought at a local pharmacy under the guise of storing essential oils—and carefully poured half of the tea into it, sealing it tightly. She then disposed of the remaining tea in the bathroom sink, rinsing the cup thoroughly.
She returned to Evelyn and fed her a bowl of plain chicken broth instead.
To Elena’s astonishment, by five o'clock, Evelyn was alert, smiling, and coherent. She didn't experience the usual evening agonizing tremors.
"Elena, my dear," Evelyn said, her voice steady. "My mind feels... clear today. For the first time in months, the fog is gone."
Elena felt a chill run down her spine. The tea was doing something to her.
That night, Elena knew she had to get the liquid tested, but she couldn't risk using any of the Vance family's private doctors—they were all on Julian’s or Victoria's payroll. She needed an independent lab. She slipped the vial into her purse, planning to slip out of the estate the following morning.
As she crept back toward her staff quarters past midnight, she saw a sliver of light coming from Julian’s private study. The door was slightly ajar. Elena paused, holding her breath, intending to walk past, but a voice stopped her cold. It was Victoria.
"Julian, we need to sign the paperwork to transfer your mother’s remaining voting shares in Vance Enterprises to our joint account before the wedding," Victoria urged, her voice dripping with artificial concern. "Her Parkinson's is advancing so rapidly. She's losing her mind, Julian. If she has another public episode, the board will panic, and the stock price will plummet."
"I am aware of the risks, Victoria," Julian replied, his voice tight, laced with exhaustion. "But my mother built this company alongside my father. Forcing her to sign away her life's work while she is incapacitated feels... wrong."
"It's not forcing her, it's protecting her!" Victoria argued sharply. "Look at her! She can barely feed herself without that pathetic waitress doing it for her. If you won't do it, I will have the family lawyers declare her mentally incompetent by the end of the week."
Elena clutched her purse tightly against her chest, her heart hammering. The vial of tea felt like a ticking time bomb in her pocket.
Suddenly, a floorboard creaked beneath Elena’s foot.
Inside the study, the voices abruptly stopped.
"Who's out there?" Julian demanded loudly.

Elena’s blood turned to ice. She heard heavy, decisive footsteps moving rapidly toward the door. If she ran, she would be caught. If she stayed, her secret would be exposed.
CRITICAL HOOK: The door handles turned. Elena closed her eyes, bracing for the worst. She was about to discover that the web of deceit in the Vance mansion was far deeper—and far deadlier—than she ever imagined!
