Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Grand Gala

The study door swung wide open.

Julian stepped out into the dimly lit hallway, his eyes scanning the darkness. Elena stood perfectly still, her back pressed hard against a deep alcove hidden behind a massive marble statue of a Greek goddess. She held her breath, her chest aching from the pressure.

Julian frowned, looking left and right, before turning back into the room. "It was just the wind, Victoria. This old house settles at night."

Elena slumped against the wall, silently gasping for air. She slipped away to her room, unable to sleep for the rest of the night. The next morning, she managed to send the vial to an independent toxicology lab using a courier service, paying with the last of her savings. She used a fake name and requested the results be sent to a secure, anonymous email address she created.

Three days later, the annual Vance Foundation Gala arrived. It was the premier high-society event of the year, held in the estate’s grand ballroom. Hundreds of billionaires, politicians, and celebrities flooded the mansion, dressed in tuxedos and diamond gowns.

Julian had requested—much to Victoria's fury—that Evelyn attend the opening portion of the gala. And because Evelyn refused to go without her, Elena was forced to attend as well. Julian had provided Elena with a simple but elegant emerald-green silk dress. When she stepped into the ballroom, her hair pinned up elegantly, she looked less like a waitress and more like royalty.

Julian’s eyes locked onto her from across the room, his gaze intense and unreadable. Victoria noticed, and her face contorted with silent rage.

As the music played, Elena kept a watchful eye on Evelyn, who was sitting at the VIP table, looking beautiful but fragile. Victoria had tried to force Evelyn to drink the special tea before coming down, but Elena had subtly spilled the cup, claiming it was an accident. Because of this, Evelyn was entirely lucid, greeting old friends with a steady smile.

While Julian was swept away by a crowd of foreign investors, Victoria seized her moment. She signaled two security guards and walked purposefully over to Elena, cornering her near the secluded terrace entrance.

"Enjoying the dress, little thief?" Victoria whispered, her voice venomous as she stepped into Elena's personal space. The two large guards stood behind her like walls of muscle.

"I didn't steal anything, Miss Victoria," Elena said firmly, refusing to back down. "Mr. Vance provided this for me to assist his mother."

"You think you’re clever, don't you? You think because Julian looks at you with a shred of curiosity, you’re safe?" Victoria laughed, a cold, mocking sound. She stepped closer, her eyes flashing with malice. "I know you've been skipping my mother-in-law's medication. I know you’ve been throwing away her tea. You are sabotaging her health, and I am going to make sure you pay for it."

"That tea is what's making her sick!" Elena retorted, her voice low but fierce.

Victoria’s expression shifted from anger to a chilling, triumphant smirk. "Oh, really? And who do you think a judge will believe? A distinguished philanthropist and future Mrs. Vance... or a broke, desperate ex-waitress with a history of financial ruin? I’ve already taken care of you, Elena."

Victoria reached into her own beaded evening bag and pulled out a stunning, multi-million-dollar diamond necklace—the Vance family heirloom that Evelyn usually wore. Before Elena could react, Victoria grabbed Elena's hand and forced the necklace into her palm, wrapping Elena's fingers around it.

"Security!" Victoria screamed at the top of her lungs, her face instantly shifting into a mask of horror. "Help! Catch her! The waitress is stealing the family jewels!"

The music in the ballroom stopped instantly. Hundreds of pairs of eyes turned toward the terrace.

CRITICAL HOOK: The security guards lunged forward, grabbing Elena’s arms and pinning her against the marble pillar. The diamond necklace fell to the floor with a loud, metallic clatter. As Julian pushed his way through the stunned crowd, his face pale with shock, Elena realized she had just been perfectly framed!
