Chapter 5 - THE GHOST IN THE LAB

The restaurant descended into a chaotic vacuum of sound. The tactical officers lowered their rifles for a fraction of a second, entirely disoriented by the live broadcast streaming from the hidden underground facility.

On the screen, my father—looking twenty pounds lighter and bearing a deep, jagged scar across his temple—stared directly out of the monitor with tired, haunted eyes.

"Arthur?!" Marcus shrieked, dropping the legal papers he was holding as if they were burning hot coals. "That's impossible! We cremated your body! I signed the death certificate!"

"You forged it, Marcus," my father’s voice rang out, steady and resonant, cutting through the restaurant like a blade. "Just like you helped Eleanor fake my heart attack so you could quietly seize control of the board. But my death was always just a placeholder. The real prize has always been Adrian—and more importantly, his bloodline."

I dropped to my knees beside Sophie, ignoring the armed guards entirely. Caleb was already working on her back again, applying a small, specialized magnetic wand to the base of her skull. With a soft click, a tiny metallic cartridge popped out of her surgical scar, smoking slightly against the cold air.

Sophie took a massive, shuddering gasp of air, her eyes snapping open.

"Dad..." she sobbed, throwing her arms around my neck with a strength I hadn't felt in two years. "It’s gone... my legs... I can feel them again!"

"I've got you, sweetheart. I've got you," I whispered, burying my face in her hair as tears of pure relief flooded my eyes.

Across the room, Marcus was losing his mind. He pulled a heavy-duty sidearm from his shoulder holster and pointed it directly at Caleb’s back. "Cut the feed! Cut it right now or the girl dies here!"

"You won't shoot, Marcus," a calm, chilling voice echoed from the restaurant's front entrance.

The heavy glass doors swung open.

A dozen armed federal agents in dark blue FBI windbreakers swarmed into the dining room, their weapons instantly training on Marcus and the four tactical mercenaries. At the front of the federal team stood Agent Vance—no, Special Agent Sarah Vance, my cousin from the federal cybercrimes division whom I hadn't spoken to in a decade.

"Drop your weapon, Marcus," Sarah commanded, her badge held high. "The jurisdiction of Vance Pharmaceuticals ended about three minutes ago when your server farm in sector four was seized by federal marshals."

Marcus froze, the pistol trembling in his hand. He looked from Sarah to the screen, where my father was slowly standing up from the conference table in the underground lab.

"It’s over, Marcus," my father said from the screen. "And Eleanor... well, Eleanor is about to find out what happens when the architect's foundation finally crumbles."
