Chapter 6 - THE ARCHITECT'S FALL

"No... no, this wasn't how it was supposed to go!" Marcus screamed, his face contorting into a mask of pure panic as federal agents swarmed him, kicking his sidearm across the floor and slamming him face-first onto the mahogany table.

The four tactical mercenaries didn't even raise their rifles; they dropped their gear to the floor and raised their hands in unison, clearly realizing the corporate paycheck wasn't worth a federal treason charge.

I stood up slowly, keeping one arm securely around Sophie, who was now standing on her own two feet for the first time in seven hundred and thirty days. Her legs were shaky, her muscles weak from atrophy, but she was upright. She was alive.

"Sarah," I breathed, looking at my cousin as she walked past the subdued mercenaries toward us. "What is all of this? How did you—"

"We've been building a RICO case against Eleanor and Marcus for three years, Adrian," Sarah said, offering me a tight, grim smile before kneeling down to check on Sophie. "Ever since Rebecca’s car went off that cliff. Rebecca wasn't running away, Adrian. She was running to us. She had the flash drive containing every illegal human trial Vance Pharmaceuticals conducted under the guise of 'neurological therapy.'"

"Rebecca..." My throat tightened. "She knew they were using Sophie's surgical trials as a testbed for their neural-control tech."

"She didn't just know," my father’s voice chimed in from the live stream on the wall monitors. The camera in the underground lab had panned around to show a second door opening. "She was the lead geneticist who designed the original fail-safe code. That's why your mother had to silence her."

On the screen, the heavy steel doors of the underground conference room slid open.

A single figure stepped out into the harsh fluorescent light.

It was my mother, Eleanor Vance.

She wasn't running. She wasn't holding a weapon. She walked with that same stiff, arrogant posture that had terrorized our family for decades, her silver hair immaculate, her tailored wool coat perfectly pressed.

She looked directly into the camera lens—straight at me, straight at Sophie standing on her own two feet across the restaurant.

"You think you won, Adrian?" Eleanor’s voice crackled through the restaurant's audio system, cold and devoid of any remorse. "You think a federal badge and a handful of corporate shares can stop what's already been set into motion?"

"It's over, Mother," I spoke into Caleb’s decryption deck, my voice echoing off the restaurant walls with a finality that shook the glass. "Your company is seized. Your doctors are in handcuffs. And your secrets are being broadcasted to every federal database in the country."

Eleanor smiled—a thin, chilling curve of her lips.

"My company was never just Vance Pharmaceuticals, my foolish boy," she whispered softly.

Then, she raised her wrist. On her arm was an identical silver control band to the one Marcus had worn.

"Say goodbye to your inheritance."
