Chapter 4 - The Shadow at the GatesBy the following week, the move to the East Pavilion was complete.

It was a luxurious, two-story stone cottage nestled among the ancient oak trees at the edge of the Calloway estate, far more lavish than anything Claire had ever dreamed of affording. There were plush rugs, a fully stocked kitchen, and a warm, crackling fireplace that burned day and night.

Yet, luxury in the Calloway empire came with a very heavy price tag.

From her second-floor window, Claire watched as three sleek black SUVs rolled through the iron gates, escorted by private security guards in tactical gear. They parked in the main courtyard, and several men in sharp, expensive suits stepped out, carrying heavy leather briefcases.

Dante Moretti had arrived.

Dante was Vincent's primary rival in the syndicate that controlled the Chicago shipping docks and underground logistics. For years, an uneasy truce had kept them from tearing each other's throats out. But rumors of Vincent's "weakness"—the rumor that his prized war dog had lost its killer instinct—had brought Dante out of the shadows, smelling blood in the water.

Down below, on the manicured lawn near the East Pavilion, Maddie was playing in the crisp morning air. She wore her red wool coat, building lopsided snowmen while Ranger sat like an obsidian statue right beside her, keeping a vigilant watch over every movement she made.

A shadow fell across the lawn.

Claire spun around from the window and rushed downstairs, throwing open the front door just as two men in dark suits approached the pavilion path. Leading them was Dante Moretti himself—slicked-back dark hair, a smug, predatory smile, and eyes as dead as winter stones.

"Well, well, well," Dante purred, stopping ten feet away from Maddie. "So this is the famous mutt that brought the great Vincent Calloway to his knees."

Ranger didn't bark. He didn't jump up.

He simply stood.

His muscles bunched beneath his thick black coat like steel cables. A low, demonic growl ripped from the depths of his chest, vibrating across the frozen grass.

Maddie looked up, unfazed. "He's busy, mister. We're building a castle."

Dante sneered, ignoring the child, and took another step forward, reaching inside his coat as if to pull out a cigar—or something much more lethal. "Nasty beast. Vincent must be getting soft in his old age, keeping a broken-down dog and a stray housekeeper around."

"Step away from the child, Dante."

The voice cut through the cold air like a razor.

Vincent was walking down the stone pathway from the main house, flanked by four armed guards. His expression was a mask of absolute, unyielding fury.

Dante turned, keeping that ugly, confident grin plastered across his face. "Ah, Vincent! Just the man I wanted to see. I heard rumors your grip on the harbor contracts was slipping. Thought I'd come check out the security myself. Looks a bit... domestic, doesn't it?"

Vincent stopped three feet from Dante. The tension between the two crime lords was so thick it could be sliced with a knife.

"My security is none of your concern, Dante," Vincent said coldly. "And if you ever step foot on this pavilion lawn again without an explicit invitation, you won't leave these gates breathing."

Dante chuckled, turning back to look at Maddie, then down at Ranger. "We'll see about that, Vincent. At the upcoming harbor auction next Friday, everything you own is up for grabs. Let's see if your little dog can protect your empire when the real wolves come out to play."

With a mocking wave, Dante turned and walked back toward his SUVs, his bodyguards trailing closely behind.

Vincent watched them leave, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He turned his gaze to Maddie, who was happily pressing a twig into her snowman's face, completely unaware that a war had just been declared.

Then Vincent looked at Ranger.

The mastiff looked back at him, gave a short huff, and gently nudged Maddie's shoulder with his nose to make sure she was still safe.
