Chapter 5 - The Midnight IntruderThe digital clock on the bedside table glowed a harsh 3:14 AM.

Claire tossed and turned, her mind racing with Dante’s words at the lawn. The harbor auction next Friday... everything you own is up for grabs. She knew that the Calloway empire wasn't just built on legitimate shipping; it was a labyrinth of dangerous secrets, powerful enemies, and shifting alliances.
Suddenly, a sound cut through the quiet hum of the heater.
Click.
It wasn't a loud noise—just the faint, metallic whisper of a latch being forced open on the ground-floor window of the East Pavilion.
Claire froze in her bed, her blood turning to ice water. She held her breath, straining her ears.
Creak.
Floorboards downstairs. Someone was inside the house.
Panic surged through her veins. She slipped out of bed, her bare feet making no sound against the wooden floorboards. She crept across the hallway to Maddie’s room, pushing the door open just enough to see her little girl sleeping soundly, clutching her stuffed bear.
Claire backed out into the hallway, her heart pounding in her throat. She needed to reach the landline phone downstairs to call the main house security, but to get there, she had to pass the staircase.
She crept down the first three steps.
Through the banister, the moonlight cut a pale stripe across the downstairs living room.
And there, standing near the kitchen counter, was a dark silhouette. A masked figure dressed head-to-toe in black, holding a small, silenced firearm, methodically searching the drawers.
Claire pressed her hand over her mouth to stop herself from screaming. She began to back up slowly, step by quiet step.
Crack.
An old floorboard groaned beneath her heel.
The masked intruder snapped his head upward, his weapon instantly pivoting toward the staircase. In the dim light, the muzzle of the gun aligned directly with Claire's chest.
Claire squeezed her eyes shut, a silent prayer forming on her lips. Maddie... please, God, protect Maddie...
A heartbeat passed. Two.

The expected gunshot never came.
Instead, a heavy, thunderous crash echoed from the front entryway, followed by a sound that made the intruder’s breath hitch in sheer terror—a wet, guttural growl that sounded less like a dog and more like a starving beast unleashed from the gates of hell.
